After an initial smaller launch back in August, Threads has now launched its expanded keyword search capacity for all users across all markets.
As expected, searching keywords on Threads displays all posts mentioning those search terms, helping users discover relevant, topical content. Results also surface posts with hashtags or topic tags related to the keywords.
According to Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, the new Threads search works across all languages available in the app. More search features are also in development.
The Threads team has moved slowly on adding search and tags due to concerns about amplifying spam-like behaviors. They want to incentivize thoughtful posting, not irrelevant tags chasing engagement. Which is why expanding search took months of testing. Additionally, you can also read about- Threads App Introduces Unique Take on Hashtags, Begins Testing in Australia
There’s no trending topics section; another element, thread worries, could enable negative behaviors. The goal is to apply lessons learned from past social media issues and avoid those pitfalls. For example, users can only add one topic tag per post right now.
Expanded search aligns with Mark Zuckerberg’s vision for Threads as “a billion-person public conversation app that is a bit more positive.” By being more deliberate in how formats like search and tags are implemented, Threads hopes to facilitate enriching discussion, not divisive arguments.
Update to the latest version of Threads to try out the new search functionality.
