After coming under fire from rock and folk luminaries for giving voice to disinformation about Covid-19 immunizations, Spotify Technology SA will add a “content advisory” to every podcast episode that involves discussion about the vaccine, according to Chief Executive Officer Daniel Ek.
In a blog post published Sunday, Ek said, “This new initiative to counteract disinformation will roll out to countries throughout the world in the coming days.” “As far as we know, this content advisory by a major podcast platform is the first of its type.”
According to a spokesman for their Archewell foundation, Prince Harry and his wife Meghan also voiced their concern to Spotify regarding Covid-19 misinformation on their platform and are committed to continuing to work with the company.
Listeners will be directed to a Covid-19 portal, which will contain facts and information from medical and health professionals, as well as links to reliable sources.
The move follows the announcement by Neil Young and Joni Mitchell that they will remove their music from Spotify in protest of the popular streaming service’s allowing the spread of false information regarding Covid-19 vaccinations.
Young took issue with his song being broadcast with Joe Rogan’s top-rated podcast “The Joe Rogan Experience.” Rogan, a well-known vaccine skeptic, has sparked debate with his opinions on the pandemic, government requirements, and immunizations to combat the coronavirus. A total of 270 scientists and medical professionals signed a letter to Spotify earlier this month demanding the company to take action against Rogan, accusing him of propagating lies on the show.
Brene Brown, host of the Spotify-exclusive podcasts “Unlocking Us” and “Dare to Lead,” said in a tweet on Saturday that she would “not be publishing any podcasts till further notice.”
Brown could not be reached for comment right away. According to Ek’s tweet, Spotify is also establishing platform regulations for its authors.
He stated, “We believe we have a key role to play in enabling creator expression while balancing it with our users’ safety.” “It’s critical to me in that job that we don’t take on the role of content censorship while simultaneously ensuring that rules are in place and that those who break them face repercussions.”
