Elon Musk, the company’s founder, congratulated SpaceX and its employees on their 20th anniversary on Tuesday. Musk launched SpaceX on March 14, 2002, with the goal of sending people to Mars.
Musk tweeted, “Congratulations SpaceX team for all that you have accomplished!”
Musk was responding to a video posted to SpaceX’s official Twitter account that featured archival images of rocket launches and mission control celebrations. The film begins with a much younger Elon Musk celebrating the company’s first few successful launches. Shots of the Dragon capsule in space, satellite deployments, and Starship prototype tests were featured in the highlight film.
“Today we celebrate the founding of SpaceX and 20 years of accomplishments by this incredible team — here’s to creating a future that we can all get excited about,” SpaceX tweeted.

The video closes with a lingering view of a Starship poised atop its massive Super Heavy first-stage rocket. After the US Federal Aviation Administration conducts an environmental review of Starship launch activities, it is slated to launch on an orbital test flight. The assessment has been postponed multiple times and is now set to end on March 28. The futuristic vehicle has yet to enter orbit, but it is intended to ferry humans to the moon, Mars, and even around the Earth as an alternative to flying.
SpaceX, based in Hawthorne, California, has a market capitalization of $74 billion and controls more than 60% of the $3.6 billion global commercial satellite launch market. The video ignores some of the controversies that have arisen as a result of SpaceX’s expansion, such as its plans to significantly expand Starlink. NASA is one of the organizations concerned about the constellation’s impact on space traffic management.
The American aerospace firm was the first to successfully launch and return a spacecraft from Earth orbit, as well as the first to launch and dock a crewed spacecraft with the International Space Station (ISS).
