Patti LuPone Shuts Down AHS Return and Talks Agatha Future

Patti LuPone American Horror Story

Tony Award-winning actress Patti LuPone has delivered a clear message to fans of the American Horror Story franchise: she has no interest in returning to the FX horror anthology series created by Ryan Murphy. Despite previously playing memorable roles in two different seasons of the show, LuPone appears ready to close the door on any future appearances.

She also threw cold water on the idea of a second season of Agatha All Along, the Marvel-Disney+ spinoff she stars in, though studio executives have hinted that a continuation is still on the table.

LuPone’s Unfiltered Thoughts on Rejoining American Horror Story

In a recent video interview with Gold Derby, Patti LuPone was asked about the possibility of returning to American Horror Story, particularly given reports that Ryan Murphy wants to reunite some of the show’s most iconic cast members for future installments. The journalist speculated that Murphy may want to bring back “the really, really cool people,” suggesting LuPone would surely be on that list.

LuPone, known for her forthright opinions, responded with a skeptical smile, saying,

“What group is that, though?”
And when the interviewer clarified, LuPone didn’t hesitate to shoot the idea down:
“Yeah, I don’t think so. I think he was probably talking about the guys.”

She accompanied her response with a physical gesture that reportedly left no doubt about her disinterest. It was a clear sign to longtime fans that her time with the AHS universe may be permanently over.

Her History with American Horror Story: Two Powerful Performances

Patti LuPone first joined the AHS cast in 2013, during the fan-favorite “Coven” season, where she played the devoutly religious Joan Ramsey. Her role was both chilling and compelling—highlighting her versatility beyond musical theatre.

Nearly a decade later, LuPone returned in 2022 for American Horror Story: NYC, portraying Kathy Pizazz, a cabaret singer and club owner in the 1980s New York City LGBTQ+ nightlife scene. LuPone’s performance was praised for its emotional depth and nuance, especially as the season explored themes like the AIDS epidemic, police brutality, and queer identity during a turbulent era in American history.

In past interviews, LuPone noted that playing Kathy helped her prepare for her next big role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). As she explained to Entertainment Weekly, the character allowed her to tap into her cabaret and theatrical roots, which would later inform her performance as a centuries-old witch in Agatha All Along.

Jessica Lange Echoes LuPone: “No” to AHS Comeback

LuPone isn’t the only American Horror Story veteran uninterested in returning. Jessica Lange, who was a cornerstone of the series’ early success, made her own firm declaration at the Dublin International Film Festival in February 2025. When asked about the potential of reprising any of her legendary roles—from Murder House to Freak Show—Lange offered a blunt response:

“Oh, Christ, no. I mean, I haven’t done it for more than 10 years, 12 years. So no, I’m not doing it.”

Her statement mirrored the sentiment LuPone would later express, signaling that a new generation of stars may be required to carry the series forward.

Mixed Signals for Agatha All Along: Is Season 2 Happening?

While LuPone has been clear about AHS, her role in the Disney+ series Agatha All Along—a spinoff of WandaVision starring Kathryn Hahn—also came under scrutiny recently.

In January 2025, LuPone told Andy Cohen during a SiriusXM interview on Andy Cohen Live that there would be no second season of Agatha All Along.

“It’s a one-off,” she said. “They’re not doing a second season.”

She suggested that showrunner Jac Schaeffer, who also created WandaVision, was not interested in extending the story further. This surprised many fans, as LuPone’s character, Lilia Calderu, had become a fan favorite and one of the few characters in the MCU to explore ancient witchcraft from a historical and mythological lens.

Marvel’s Perspective: Second Season Not Off the Table

However, just weeks after LuPone’s comments, Brad Winderbaum, Marvel’s head of streaming, television, and animation, gave a conflicting view in an Entertainment Weekly interview.

“A show like Agatha, to me, is concept-based,” Winderbaum explained. “Yes, a second season for sure is something that we would want to do, but let’s not rush it. Let’s get the right idea and then make it.”

This suggests that Marvel Studios is still open to revisiting the Agatha universe—possibly in an anthology format or as a standalone sequel, depending on creative direction and audience demand.

A Legend Focused on Theater and Select Roles

Patti LuPone’s candor and career choices reflect her commitment to meaningful, artistically fulfilling roles. She has stated in multiple interviews that she values creative integrity over mass-market appeal, even if that means walking away from high-profile franchises.

In 2024, she returned to Broadway in a limited run of Company, which earned rave reviews and reminded audiences of her unmatched stage presence. It’s clear that LuPone is focusing on roles that speak to her passions, and large franchises may no longer align with her personal goals.

What’s Next for Patti LuPone?

For now, it seems LuPone is stepping away from witches, spells, and cabaret singers on screen. While American Horror Story and Agatha All Along continue to evolve without her, LuPone remains a towering figure in entertainment—one who is unafraid to speak her truth, make bold decisions, and carve her own path.

Whether on stage or screen, fans can count on her for one thing: authenticity.
