On the count of three, both players turn over their top two cards and call out the sum of their numbers (for example, a 6 and a 4 equals 10). The player with the higher sum wins all four cards. If both players produce identical sums, a “War” is triggered: each lays three cards face down and flips two more face up to compare the new sum.

3. Close to 20

Deal 5 cards to each player. From their hand of 5, each player selects 3 cards that add up to a number as close to 20 as possible (above or below). For example, hand cards of 7, 8, and 4 yield a sum of 19, leaving a point score of 1 (the difference from 20). After 5 rounds, the player with the lowest cumulative score wins.

4. Integer Jump

Assign red cards (Hearts and Diamonds) as negative numbers and black cards (Spades and Clubs) as positive numbers. Deal two cards to each player. Players must calculate the sum of their positive and negative integers (e.g., Red 7 and Black 4 yields $-7 + 4 = -3$). The player closest to positive 10 or zero wins the hand, making this ideal for middle-school algebra prep.

5. Memory Match Sums

Lay 16 cards face down in a 4×4 grid. Before starting, choose a target sum (such as 12). Players take turns flipping two cards face up. If the two cards add up to the target sum (e.g., 8 and 4), the player keeps the pair and takes another turn. If they do not add up to the target, the cards are turned face down again, requiring players to remember card positions.

6. Subtraction Speed Race

Deal the full deck evenly between two players. Each player flips their top card simultaneously onto the table. The first player to correctly subtract the smaller number from the larger number and shout out the correct difference wins both cards. This rapid-fire game builds instant mental subtraction recall.

7. Multiplication Array Duel

Using a full deck (Aces = 1, face cards removed), players draw two cards on their turn. The first card represents the number of rows, and the second card represents the number of columns. Each player arranges their cards in any order to form the largest possible number. A player holding 3, 9, and 5 can arrange them into 953. The player who creates the largest multi-digit number takes the round point.
