Netflix Begins Production on ‘One Piece’ Season 3

Netflix One Piece Season 3 Production

Netflix has officially begun production on the third season of its live-action “One Piece” adaptation, marking a significant milestone for the streaming platform’s ambitious manga adaptation project. Filming commenced on November 24, 2025, in Cape Town, South Africa, with the original Straw Hat crew reassembling to continue their epic pirate saga. This announcement arrives months ahead of Season 2’s scheduled premiere on March 10, 2026, signaling Netflix’s confidence in the series and a deliberate effort to reduce the lengthy production gaps that plagued earlier seasons.

Accelerated Production Timeline Addresses Fan Concerns

The production team has significantly ramped up their schedule to address the three-year gap between Seasons 1 and 2, which was largely attributed to industry strikes that halted filming across Hollywood. By beginning work on Season 3 before Season 2 has even premiered, Netflix demonstrates its commitment to maintaining momentum for the franchise and delivering content more efficiently to its global fanbase. Industry observers note that filming is expected to continue through summer 2026, with post-production work likely requiring at least a year, positioning a 2027 release as highly probable—a much shorter wait than the previous multi-year hiatus.

This accelerated timeline reflects Netflix’s strategic planning for what has been revealed as a long-term project. The streaming service has indicated that the live-action series is being planned for up to 12 seasons, suggesting a comprehensive adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s beloved manga that has captivated audiences worldwide for over two decades. The early renewal and rapid production start signal Netflix’s faith in the series‘ ability to attract and retain subscribers while building a sustainable franchise.

Alabasta Arc: The Desert Kingdom Awaits

Season 3 will adapt the Alabasta Arc, one of the most celebrated and pivotal storylines in the “One Piece” universe, spanning manga chapters 155 to 217. This arc represents the culmination of the Alabasta Saga, which began at the conclusion of Season 1 with the introduction of characters like Smoker and the first hints of the crew’s journey into the Grand Line. The Alabasta Arc follows the Straw Hat Pirates as they arrive in the vast desert kingdom of Alabasta, where they must prevent an impending civil war orchestrated by the shadowy criminal organization Baroque Works.

Netflix released a striking teaser image that offers visual hints about the upcoming season’s setting and tone. The promotional material showcases the first episode script titled “Where There’s Smoke,” written by Ashley Wigfield and directed by Christoph Schrewe, surrounded by evocative objects: a sheathed knife, a human skull, and a Log Pose—the essential navigational tool used to traverse the unpredictable waters of the Grand Line. These items are arranged against a desert backdrop, directly referencing the arid, politically turbulent setting of the Alabasta kingdom where much of the season’s action will unfold.

The Alabasta Arc is particularly significant in “One Piece” lore because it represents the crew’s first major test as they face a coordinated threat from a powerful criminal syndicate. The storyline delves deeper into the Baroque Works organization, which was introduced at the end of Season 1 and will be expanded upon in Season 2. This arc features complex political intrigue, large-scale battles, emotional character moments, and introduces key figures who will remain important throughout the broader “One Piece” narrative.

Major Cast Expansions and Series Regular Promotions

The production has announced significant changes to the cast structure, with four actors from Season 2 being promoted to series regular status for Season 3. Mikaela Hoover will continue as Tony Tony Chopper, the beloved reindeer doctor of the Straw Hat crew, while Joe Manganiello returns as the enigmatic Mr. 0, the leader of Baroque Works whose true identity and schemes will be central to the season’s plot. Lera Abova reprises her role as Miss All Sunday, another key Baroque Works operative with mysterious motivations, and Sendhil Ramamurthy will portray Nefartari Cobra, the king of Alabasta whose kingdom stands at the brink of civil war.

The original Straw Hat Pirates crew returns in their entirety, maintaining the chemistry that made Season 1 a success with audiences worldwide. Iñaki Godoy continues as the irrepressibly optimistic Monkey D. Luffy, the rubber-bodied pirate captain determined to become King of the Pirates. Mackenyu returns as the stoic swordsman Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd as the skilled navigator Nami, Jacob Romero as the sharpshooter Usopp, and Taz Skylar as the chivalrous chef Sanji.

New additions to the cast include Cole Escola, a Tony Award-winning performer known for the Broadway production “Oh, Mary!” who will portray the theatrical and flamboyant assassin Bon Clay, a character beloved by fans for his unique fighting style and complex moral compass. Perhaps most notably, Xolo Maridueña, recognized for his role in “Cobra Kai,” joins the ensemble as Portgas D. Ace, Luffy’s older adoptive brother and a significant figure whose appearance marks an important emotional and narrative milestone in the “One Piece” story.

Behind the Scenes: The Creative Team

The production maintains continuity while evolving its leadership structure for Season 3. Joe Tracz, who served as co-showrunner alongside Matt Owens for Season 2, will continue in his role for Season 3, this time partnering with Ian Stokes as co-showrunner, writer, and executive producer. This transition ensures creative consistency while bringing fresh perspectives to the expanding narrative.

Crucially, Eiichiro Oda, the creator of the original “One Piece” manga, remains deeply involved as an executive producer, ensuring that the live-action adaptation stays true to the spirit and details of his creation. Additional executive producers include Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements from Tomorrow Studios, along with other key creative figures who have shepherded the project from its inception. The series is developed in collaboration with Shueisha, the Japanese publisher of the “One Piece” manga, and produced by Tomorrow Studios (an ITV Studios partner) alongside Netflix.

The involvement of Christoph Schrewe as director for the Season 3 premiere episode is particularly noteworthy, as he brings extensive experience in crafting visually ambitious television that balances action, drama, and character development. Ashley Wigfield’s script for “Where There’s Smoke” sets the stage for the complex political and personal conflicts that will define the Alabasta Arc.

Global Anticipation and Franchise Future

The “One Piece” live-action adaptation has emerged as one of Netflix’s most ambitious international projects, adapting a manga series that has sold over 500 million copies worldwide and spawned a long-running anime that continues to captivate audiences across generations. The series chronicles the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, a young pirate with rubber powers gained from eating a Devil Fruit, as he assembles his crew and searches for the legendary treasure known as the One Piece, which would grant him the title of King of the Pirates.

Season 2, subtitled “Into the Grand Line,” will introduce viewers to the Grand Line—a mythical and treacherous expanse of ocean filled with strange islands, powerful adversaries, and unpredictable dangers at every turn. The synopsis promises formidable new foes and the most daunting adventures yet as the Straw Hats navigate this unpredictable territory in pursuit of their ultimate goal. This season will lay crucial groundwork for the conflicts and character relationships that will come to fruition in Season 3’s Alabasta Arc.

The early renewal for Season 3, announced during the annual “One Piece Day” festivities held in Tokyo, demonstrates both Netflix’s commitment to the property and the strong response the first season received from audiences globally. By maintaining production in Cape Town, South Africa, the team can leverage the location’s diverse landscapes and established film infrastructure to bring the varied settings of the “One Piece” world to life, from bustling port towns to vast desert kingdoms.
