Klay Thompson Signs with Mavericks in 3-Year, $50 Million Deal

klay thompson signs mavericks 3 year deal

Free agent guard Klay Thompson has agreed to a three-year, $50 million contract with the Dallas Mavericks, ending his historic 13-year run with the Golden State Warriors.

This move marks a significant shift in the NBA landscape as Thompson departs from the team with which he won four championships and solidified his legacy as one of the greatest shooters in the history of the NBA.

Motivation Behind the Move

Thompson’s decision to join the Mavericks was primarily inspired by the chance to compete for a fifth title with the Western Conference champions.

The Mavericks, who came within three victories of an NBA championship last season, presented a compelling opportunity for Thompson. The financial savings from living in Texas compared to California also influenced his decision.

The Deal Details

The deal, negotiated by his agent, Greg Lawrence of Wasserman, required a multiteam sign-and-trade. Mavericks guard/forward Josh Green will be sent to the Charlotte Hornets, and two second-round picks will go to the Warriors.

Dallas is sending its 2031 second-round pick and the least favorable of the 76ers or Nuggets’ second-round pick in 2025.

Meetings and Negotiations

Lawrence and Thompson met with Mavericks GM Nico Harrison and VP Michael Finley at the Bottle Inn in Hermosa Beach, California, to finalize the details of the partnership.

The Los Angeles Lakers were also a potential destination for Thompson, but the Mavericks’ recent success and financial advantages tipped the scales in their favor.

Thompson’s Final Season with the Warriors

The final season of Thompson’s remarkable career with the Warriors saw increasing strain over contract discussions and his looming free agency.

His role with the team fluctuated, culminating in him being pulled from the closing lineup and moving to a bench role. Despite these challenges, Thompson averaged 17.9 points last season, his lowest since 2012-13.

Historical Impact of the Warriors

Thompson’s tenure with the Warriors has left an indelible mark on the franchise and the NBA. Alongside Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, Thompson formed a trio that accounted for 518 wins in the regular season and playoffs, the sixth most by a trio all time.

Their 98 playoff wins together rank third in NBA history, and their four titles are tied with Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker for the most by an All-NBA trio over the past 50 seasons.

Warriors’ Farewell

In a heartfelt statement, the Warriors expressed their gratitude for Thompson’s contributions and announced plans to retire his No. 11 jersey. “The amount of joy and happiness that Klay provided Warriors fans, Bay Area natives, and Dub Nation supporters all around the world has been immense and cannot be minimized,” the statement read.

“Klay’s legacy will live on forever, and we look forward to the day we can retire his 11 jersey at Chase Center, where he will join a host of Warriors immortals.”

New Beginnings in Dallas

Thompson joins the Mavericks as part of a multi-team sign-and-trade that will also send Mavericks guard Josh Green to Charlotte.

The move signifies a new chapter for Thompson, who will pair up with Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, aiming to bring an NBA title to Dallas. The Mavericks’ offense, which sputtered in the NBA Finals, will benefit significantly from Thompson’s shooting prowess.

Adjusting to a New System

Thompson will have to adjust to the Mavericks’ heliocentric offense, which revolves around Doncic’s shot creation, a stark contrast to the motion offense he thrived in with the Warriors.

Despite the stylistic differences, the combination of talent on the Mavericks roster offers a promising outlook.

Legacy and Future

Thompson’s move to the Mavericks is a significant moment in NBA history. His departure from the Warriors ends one of the most successful runs by a trio in NBA history.

As Thompson begins his journey with the Mavericks, his legacy as one of the greatest shooters and clutch performers in the history of the NBA remains firmly intact.

The Mavericks, bolstered by his arrival, are now positioned as strong contenders for the upcoming seasons.

Klay Thompson’s agreement with the Dallas Mavericks on a three-year, $50 million deal marks the end of an era with the Golden State Warriors and the beginning of a new chapter in his illustrious career.

As he aims for more championships with the Mavericks, his legacy with the Warriors will forever be celebrated, and his impact on the NBA will continue to be felt.
