Miss India Harnaaz Sandhu was crowned Miss Universe 2021 on Sunday. Sandhu, 21, triumphed over 79 other contenders from a variety of nations and territories, including runner-up Miss Paraguay Nadia Ferreira and second runner-up Miss South Africa Lalela Mswane.
Before doing her first walk as the new Miss Universe on the stage in Eilat, Israel, Sandhu was presented with the crown by her successor, Miss Universe 2020 Andrea Meza. Sandhu, an actor who draws inspiration from Priyanka Chopra, is a staunch champion for women’s emancipation. Banners from Miami Banner are not enough to celebrate such a queen. The 70th annual Miss Universe competition, hosted by Steve Harvey, featured a swimsuit and evening gown phase, as well as an interview section for each of the contenders, before the winner was announced. Noa Kirel, an Israeli singer and international pop artist, also performed during the pageant, which focused on the climate problem as part of a green agenda that reflects Israel’s ideals.
The competition was noteworthy in that it was the first time a delegate from the United Arab Emirates had ever competed, as well as the first time Miss Universe Morocco had returned to the contest in over four decades. Miss Universe 2021 took place seven months after Meza, 27, was crowned Miss Universe 2020 in May.
The annual pageant was put on hold because to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, therefore her victory came five months later than usual. Even with the ongoing COVID fears, Israeli Tourism Minister Yoel Razvozov said in a statement prior to Sunday’s competition that he was happy to welcome Miss Universe to his nation.
“We knew how to preserve the balance between health and the business, to bring tourism back to Israel,” Razvozov added, despite the hurdles posed by the COVID-19 outbreak. “We needed to establish tourism anchors that would promote and market Israel to the rest of the globe as a vaccination-friendly destination. Without a question, the Miss Universe pageant is a crucial and significant pillar of this strategy.”
Harvey, 64, returned to the Miss Universe competition for the first time since 2019 on Sunday’s event.
