George Miller Hints at More ‘Mad Max’ Films at Cannes: “Other Stories Await”

Furiosa Mad Max George Miller Teases More Films Cannes

George Miller, the acclaimed director behind the ‘Mad Max’ franchise, has hinted at the possibility of more films in the series.

During a press conference for his latest project, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, which premiered out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival, Miller spoke about the potential future of the franchise.

“There’s certainly other stories there, maybe because in order to tell the story of Fury Road, we had to build the backstory of Furiosa, and of Max in the year before,” said Miller. “That was a tool for the cast and crew. So we know the backstory. But definitely wait and see how this one does [before starting new films].”

Miller reflected on the longevity of the ‘Mad Max’ series, expressing his amazement at its enduring popularity. “I’m still going; I never thought I’d make two Mad Max movies, now I’m on my fifth. I’ve often wondered, Am I crazy? Then I realized I’m driven by my curiosity,” he shared.

Joining Miller at the press conference were actors Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth, and Tom Burke, along with producer Doug Mitchell. Taylor-Joy, who plays the titular character Furiosa, praised the stunt crew and the film’s rigorous safety protocols, stating, “It doesn’t make sense how safe this film was” given the number of large stunts involved.

“No action movie, specifically Mad Max, exists without an unbelievable stunt department,” Taylor-Joy continued, giving special recognition to veteran stunt performer Guy Norris and her own stunt double Hayley Wright. “She is my sister; we met on this movie, and she’s now one of my best friends in the entire world. Everything that she did, I did too.”

Taylor-Joy emphasized the supportive and collaborative environment on set. “The most important thing is rather than it being an environment of aggression in any way, of ‘you have to do this’; it was ‘I love you, I believe in you, you can do this’. And they would help you do it in the best possible way that you can.”

Echoing Taylor-Joy’s sentiments, Mitchell highlighted the film’s commitment to safety. “Led by George, our first responsibility is not to injure anyone,” he said.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is set for release by Warner Bros on May 24 in the US, UK-Ireland, and most international territories. As fans eagerly await this new installment, Miller’s comments have sparked excitement and speculation about the future adventures in the Mad Max universe.
