When Prince Charles becomes king, Britain’s Queen Elizabeth stated on Saturday that she would prefer Camilla, Prince Charles’ wife, to be given the title of Queen Consort.
Elizabeth said the occasion had given her pause to think on the devotion and affection shown to her by the British public in a letter addressed to mark the 70th anniversary of her accession to the throne.
“And I know you will offer my son Charles and his wife Camilla the same support you have given me when the time comes,” Elizabeth said. “And it is my honest intention that, when that time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own devoted duty,” Elizabeth said.
Long-time lovers Charles and Camilla married in a civil ceremony in Windsor in 2005. Elizabeth’s decision demonstrates a growing recognition of Camilla’s royal position. She is no longer the target of tabloid headlines, as she was in the decade following the death of Charles’ first wife, Princess Diana.
Camilla, who now has the title of Duchess of Cornwall, now routinely represents the royal family in public with Charles. Throughout British history, a king’s wife has been given the title Queen Consort, which has no legal standing. It had been decided at the time of their marriage that Camilla would use the title Princess Consort if Charles became king.
