Since the pandemic began, more than 150,000 people in the UK have died within 28 days of a positive Covid test.
On Saturday, the government’s daily figures revealed another 313 deaths, bringing the total to 150,057, BBC reports.
After the United States, Brazil, India, Russia, Mexico, and Peru, the United Kingdom is the seventh country to reach 150,000 reported deaths. “Every death caused by this virus is a tragedy, and our sympathies are with everyone who has lost loved ones,” a government spokesman said. In the UK, there have been 146,390 new cases, with the more transmissible Omicron variant driving the increase.
The number of people dying within 28 days of receiving a positive test has begun to rise, with 1,271 deaths in the last seven days, up 38.3% from the previous week.
Because of the impact of vaccinations, Covid hospital admissions and deaths are not increasing at the same rate as in previous waves.
Hospitals, on the other hand, are still under strain as a result of rising admissions and Covid-related staff absences. Camilla Claridge of Oxfordshire lost her grandmother to Covid in February of last year, and on the night of her funeral, she found out that her father was also dying of the virus.
“After we buried Nan and returned home from the funeral, we were awoken at one a.m. by a phone call saying it was time to think about saying our goodbyes,” she explained.
“It was a nightmare.” When you walk into the ICU, all you see are beds lined up with machines breathing for them…. Because of all the tubes, I didn’t even recognize [my father].”
“It’s difficult to imagine 150,000 people, families, who have gone through what we have,” she continued. The death toll was “absolutely tragic,” according to Prof Andrew Hayward, a member of the government’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies.
