At least 11 people were killed when an explosion went off in a mosque in northern Afghanistan during the funeral of the Taliban’s local deputy governor, who died in an attack earlier this week.

More than 30 people were also hurt in the blast in Badakhshan, a county in the far north that shares borders with China and Tajikistan and is run by the Taliban.

Safiullah Samim, a former police leader in northern Baghlan province, was among the dead, according to a statement of condolences from another police chief, Najibullah Badakhshi.

Ashraf Nael, a resident of Faizabad, said that he was in a nearby court building when he heard an explosion around 11 a.m., which was muffled by the mosque walls, and then many ambulances rushed to the scene.

Islamic State terrorists said they were behind Tuesday’s car bomb that killed Badakhshan’s deputy governor.

The Taliban government has been carrying out raids against members of S, which is responsible for a number of big attacks in cities.

IS has gone after leaders in the Taliban government, and in March, they said they killed the governor of northern Balkh province.
