8 New Movies and TV Shows on Netflix and Hulu

What should you watch this weekend? If you’re planning a spring break binge, you’re in luck since Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, HBO Max, and other streaming services have a slew of new movies and episodes available to watch.

The Kardashians, the latest reality series from America’s most renowned celebrity family, headlines this weekend’s lineup. It’s essentially the same episode that aired on E!, except it’s now only available on Hulu. The mythical Western Outer Range resembles Yellowstone but is as mysterious as Lost for a different kind of drama.

The Kardashians (Hulu)

New Kardashians channel, new Kardashians time, but the same Kardashians and Jenners we know and love (or love to hate). The reigning reality TV family has migrated from their long-time home at E! to the cooler streaming waters of Hulu.

The new series continues to follow the many members of the family. Kim is nervously ready to host Saturday Night Live, but she is also upset at the release of previously unseen images from her old sex tape (and the chance that her kids may come across it). Kourtney is in the midst of a new relationship with Travis Barker, while Kylie is keeping mum about the gender of her upcoming baby. Of course, if you follow celebrity gossip, you’ll be aware of how all three of these narratives unfold. The goal of a Kardashians show, though, isn’t the plot (LOL); it’s getting a behind-the-scenes look at their extremely prominent life.

Amazon’s new Western feels like it was marketed as “Yellowstone meets LOST.” It’s not a horrible notion, given the success of both of those shows. Josh Brolin plays Royal Abbott, a Wyoming rancher whose family is grappling with the disappearance of his daughter-in-law. In addition, his neighbor is claiming a portion of the Abbotts’ land.

Then, in his west pasture, Royal discovers a weird, intermittent, spinning black hole. It’s unknown why it’s there, what it does, and what happens if somebody enters it. The appearance of an enigmatic hippie (Imogen Poots), who develops a relationship with the emptiness, complicates everything even further. Outer Range, like any good puzzle box program, encourages plenty of theorizing and deciphering of hints. Even as it delivers answers, it raises new questions – akin to a bottomless pit.

Roar (Apple TV Plus)

The anthology of darkly humorous female fables is based on Cecelia Ahern’s book of short stories and is the work of Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch, the creators of GLOW (Netflix’s cancellation still irritates us). It stars a slew of award-winning and well-known actresses, including Nicole Kidman, Cynthia Erivo, Merritt Wever, Issa Rae, Alison Brie, Betty Gilpin, Meera Syal, and Kara Hayward.

The episodes are a mash-up of several genres, ranging from satire to psychological horror to magical realism. The stories delve into the lives of ordinary women who find themselves in unusual situations. Kidman consumes images in order to experience a kind of memory rush, while Gilpin’s husband (Daniel Dae Kim) constructs a platform fit for a trophy wife. Erivo and Rae are confronted with unusually horrible problems. Being a woman is terrifying in this Twilight Zone.

The First Lady (Showtime)

Every great president is supported by a terrific first lady. The drama on Showtime centers on three of these women: Michelle Obama (Viola Davis), Betty Ford (Michelle Pfeiffer), and Eleanor Roosevelt (Gillian Anderson). The show blends their tales together, following them from infancy to marriage to the East Wing of the White House.

The episodes cut back and forth in time to important events in their lives, such as meeting their husbands (in the present: O. T. Fagbenle as Barack Obama, Aaron Eckhart as Gerald Ford, and Kiefer Sutherland as Franklin D. Roosevelt). We learn about their personal challenges, such as Michelle’s battle with racism in academics and Betty’s battle with drug and alcohol addiction.

Killing It (Peacock)

Eat the wealthy and slay snakes. Craig Robinson stars in this new comedy about capitalism, class, and the entrepreneurship culture. It’s produced by Brooklyn Nine-Nine vets Dan Goor and Luke Del Tredici, so the credentials are there.

Craig is a struggling security guard and divorced father whose ex intends to relocate their daughter out of state. He enters a secret competition of childhood games, desperate and down on his luck — waits, wrong show. Craig encounters a rideshare driver (Claudia O’Doherty) who informs him about a $20,000 snake-killing contest. That’s life-changing money, and he won’t even have to deal with a gigantic killer doll.

Anatomy of a Scandal (Netflix)

If the first season of the anthology drama sounds a little like The Undoing, it’s because they both wear the author/producer David E. Kelley’s imprint. Nicole Kidman’s character in The Undoing pondered if her doctor husband was a criminal or not. Sienna Miller in Anatomy of a Scandal bears the burden of suspecting her politician spouse (Rupert Friend).

Sophie Whitehouse’s life is flipped upside down when James admits to having an affair. “It was only sex,” he argues, but his staffer (Naomi Scott) accuses him of raping her in the workplace elevator after they ended their clandestine connection. Sophie initially supports James until the prosecuting barrister (Michelle Dockery) starts tearing him apart at trial. It’s yet another case of a woman discovering her husband isn’t who she thought he was.

Choose or Die (Netflix)

Take Jumanji, add a splash of Tron, and some vibes from Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, and you’ve got Choose or Die. Kayla (Iola Evans), a young developer, stumbles into an ancient 1980s survival computer game and decides to try to defeat it for the unclaimed prize of $125,000. She joins forces with her best buddy Isaac to improve her chances even further (Asa Butterfield).

Soon, Kayla discovers CURS>R isn’t simply a game – it’s cursed, as the name implies. The first time she plays, she is forced to make awful decisions that affect the real world around her. And now that she and Isaac have begun, they must complete the game or perish trying.

Our Great National Parks (Netflix)

Former President Barack Obama joins Sir David Attenborough in narrating this five-part docuseries exploring national parks throughout the world. It offers gorgeous, high-definition footage of landscapes, plants, and wildlife, as do many nature documentaries.

The first episode provides an overview of national parks in the United States, including Yellowstone, the country’s first. Our Great National Parks then proceeds to Kenya’s Tsavo National Park, Indonesia’s Gunung Leuser National Park, Chilean Patagonia, and other destinations. Obama’s polite, soothing narration is played over stunning imagery. Make certain to watch in 4K UHD.
