Matthew Lawrence Claims Ryan Reynolds Had Issues on Film Set

Matthew Lawrence Claims Ryan Reynolds Film Set Issues

Matthew Lawrence recently shared his experience working with Ryan Reynolds during the early 2000s, revealing that the now-famous actor had creative disputes with the producers and director of their film Boltneck (2000).

Speaking on his Brotherly Love Podcast, the Boy Meets World star claimed that a young Reynolds was difficult to work with due to his insistence on performing the role in his own way.

Producers Criticized Reynolds’ Performance

According to Lawrence, producers were unhappy with Reynolds’ approach to his character and confronted him over his performance. They allegedly told him, “Ryan, this is a bad Jim Carrey impersonation. This is not what we hired you to do.”

Lawrence, 45, recalled that Reynolds, 48, became frustrated with the criticism and stood his ground, responding, “I’m doing my thing.”

Conflict Between Reynolds and the Crew

In Boltneck, Lawrence played a science nerd named Frank Stein, who revives Reynolds’ character after he is killed by bullies. Lawrence claimed that the producers envisioned the film as a sci-fi thriller akin to Donnie Darko, but Reynolds allegedly infused the script with humor, resembling the tone of Deadpool. This creative difference reportedly caused tension on set.

“There was this major pull between one of the lead actors … so that is what my experience with Ryan Reynolds was,” Lawrence said. He also noted that Reynolds has matured significantly since those early career struggles.

Oscar-Nominated Crew Frustrated with Reynolds

Lawrence also recalled witnessing a meeting between Reynolds and the film’s director. He emphasized that the crew, who had just been nominated for an Academy Award, had high expectations for the project.

According to IMDb, Boltneck producers Paul Colichman and Mark R. Harris had previously worked on Gods and Monsters (1998), which won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. Lawrence claimed that due to Reynolds’ alleged attitude, the crew dismissed his potential, with some saying, “So much hope for this guy. He’s going nowhere.”

Looking back, Lawrence found this ironic given Reynolds’ meteoric rise in Hollywood.

Reynolds Allegedly Blamed for the Film’s Failure

Lawrence further revealed that the film’s failure was largely attributed to Reynolds by the production team. “They blamed that movie not working on him because they said there was this whole conflict,” he said.

Attempts to reach Reynolds’ representatives for comment have not yet been successful.

Connection to Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni’s Legal Battle

Lawrence’s revelations about Reynolds surfaced during a discussion about the ongoing legal battle involving Reynolds’ wife, Blake Lively, and actor-director Justin Baldoni.

Baldoni, 41, has filed a defamation and extortion lawsuit against Lively and Reynolds, following allegations of sexual harassment in a California Civil Rights Department complaint. Baldoni has denied the claims and countered that Reynolds aggressively confronted him over comments regarding Lively’s weight on the set of It Ends With Us.

Additionally, Baldoni accused Reynolds and Lively of rewriting a crucial rooftop scene and attempting to take control of the film’s production. He alleged that Lively pressured him with support from Reynolds and Taylor Swift, stating, “Baldoni was not just dealing with Lively. He was also facing Lively’s ‘dragons,’ two of the most influential and wealthy celebrities in the world.”

Lively has previously admitted to taking an active role in film production. At a 2022 Forbes Power Women’s Summit, she remarked, “I need to have authorship in order to feel fulfilled.” However, she has dismissed Baldoni’s lawsuit as an attempt to silence her accusations, stating, “This is another chapter in the abuser playbook.

The trial for Baldoni and Lively’s legal battle is scheduled to begin on March 9, 2026. Mediation efforts have been unsuccessful.
