5 Reasons You May Need to See a Periodontist

Periodontist

As you may be aware, a periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the treatment of gum-related issues – including dental implants, and oral inflammations. But what you may not know is when exactly you need to see a periodontist as opposed to a regular dentist.

If you’re having oral health issues and aren’t sure whether you should book an appointment with a periodontist or not, here are five signs that you should:

  • Loose teeth

If your teeth feel loose that means that the attachment between the roots of your teeth and gums or bone has been affected. It can be a sign of a periodontal pocket or thinning bone.

Even if you aren’t certain, it is best to visit a periodontist to have it checked out. Assuming it is a sign of periodontitis, catching it as early as possible can help minimize damage.

  • Gum or jaw pain

Oral pain is a relatively common symptom of cavities or other issues – but if it extends to your gums or jaw then it is normally a sign of gum disease. If you want you can visit your dentist first for an examination and deep cleaning session, but if it is gum disease they’re likely to refer you to a periodontist afterward. Bellaire Dental Center offers exceptional dental care and compassion in a warm, friendly environment. They go out of their way to provide high-quality dentistry and care.

  • Receding gums

As you age it is normal for your gums to recede – but they shouldn’t recede too quickly. If you notice that your teeth look longer than they used to, it is likely to be a sign of gum disease and you should get it checked out as soon as you can.

  • Shifted bite

A shift in the alignment of your bite is normally an indication of periodontal issues. It may be a slight change, but you’re likely to notice it when you chew, brush your teeth, talk or sleep.

Be sure to make any changes in your bite seriously. Without treatment, it could lead to other long-term issues that are detrimental to your oral health.

  • Inflamed gums with blood or pus

The first sign of gum disease that you’re likely to notice is red or swollen gums that are inflamed and may even bleed when you brush or floss. As the infection builds it may even lead to a gum abscess with a pus discharge.

Although a dentist may be able to recommend treatment for the early stages of gingivitis, it is best to see a periodontist if you suspect it is serious.

  • Bad breath

If you have bad breath it basically means that there is a lot of bacteria building up in your mouth. While that may not be a definitive sign of gum disease, it is something to keep an eye (or nose) out for especially if it is persistent and doesn’t seem to go away no matter how thoroughly you brush and floss your teeth.

By now you should be aware of the main reasons why you may need to visit a periodontist. Keep in mind that it is important to book an appointment as soon as you even suspect that you have gum disease. Getting it treated early can make a world of difference, and will help to prevent permanent damage to your teeth and gums as the infection gets worse and leads to other issues as well.
