Former Nickelodeon Star Lori Beth Denberg Accuses Dan Schneider of Misconduct

Lori Beth Denberg Dan Schneider Predatory Behavior

Lori Beth Denberg, a prominent figure from the 1990s hit children’s television show “All That,” has made serious allegations against her former boss, Dan Schneider, who was a key figure at Nickelodeon during that era.

Allegations of Predatory Behavior

In a candid interview with Business Insider, Denberg, now 48, recounted her experiences with Schneider, describing his behavior as predatory. She detailed instances where Schneider allegedly showed her pornography, fondled her, and initiated phone sex during their time working together. These revelations have surfaced amidst a broader scrutiny of Schneider’s conduct highlighted in the recent docuseries “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV,” which aired in March.

The Abusive Relationship

Denberg shared that her troubling interactions with Schneider began when she was 19, describing their relationship as “weird and abusive.” Schneider, who was a decade older than Denberg, reportedly exploited her vulnerability. “I couldn’t have been more vulnerable,” Denberg reflected on her past.

Incidents at Schneider’s Home

The allegations extend to situations where Denberg would sleep over at Schneider’s home. Although she stated they were not intimate, she mentioned they exchanged massages. A particularly disturbing incident involved Schneider fondling and kissing her breasts after she won a bet while watching “Jeopardy!.”

Reflecting on the Power Imbalance

Denberg, who starred in “All That” from 1994 to 1998 and later returned for its revival, admitted that she did not perceive their interactions as inappropriate at the time due to her age. However, she has since grappled with the significant power imbalance that characterized their relationship. She recalled multiple occasions where Schneider showed her pornography, the first instance being in his office.

Schneider’s Denial and Apology

Schneider has vehemently denied Denberg’s account, labeling it as “wildly exaggerated and, in most cases, false.” He acknowledged past mistakes and poor judgment in his early career but firmly denied the specific allegations made by Denberg. “If I did that with respect to Lori Beth, I sincerely apologize to her. But I cannot apologize for things I did not do,” Schneider stated.

Business Insider and “Quiet on Set” Docuseries

The Business Insider article by Kate Taylor, who also served as an executive producer for the “Quiet on Set” docuseries, sheds light on the larger issues surrounding Schneider’s time at Nickelodeon. The documentary features testimonies from former employees who criticized Schneider for soliciting massages on set and incorporating sexualized humor and inappropriate jokes into his shows.

Previous Investigations by ViacomCBS

In 2021, The New York Times reported that ViacomCBS, Nickelodeon’s parent company, had conducted an investigation into Schneider before his departure in 2018. The investigation concluded that Schneider was often verbally abusive, but it found no evidence of sexual misconduct.

Nickelodeon’s Response and Attempts to Reach Denberg

Nickelodeon representatives have not responded to requests for comments on these latest allegations. Attempts to reach Denberg for further comments were also unsuccessful.

Schneider’s Public Apology

Following the release of the docuseries, Schneider posted a video on YouTube apologizing for certain behaviors alleged by former employees, including soliciting massages and making inappropriate jokes in the writers’ room. He declined to participate in the documentary, instead issuing a statement included in the documentary. Schneider emphasized in his statement that “dozens of involved adults carefully scrutinized everything that happened on the shows I ran,” and that parents and caregivers were always present during rehearsals and filming.

The accusations brought forward by Lori Beth Denberg add to the growing scrutiny of Dan Schneider’s conduct during his influential tenure at Nickelodeon. While Schneider denies the specific allegations, his acknowledgment of past mistakes and the testimonies from other former employees suggest a complex and troubling workplace environment. As the story develops, it highlights the ongoing conversations about power dynamics and misconduct in the entertainment industry.
