Facing Difficulty in the Workplace? Here’s How to Cope

Overcoming Workplace Challenges

There are so many reasons that you may be finding your work life difficult to handle. Perhaps you are in a role that doesn’t satisfy you or play to your strengths. Maybe you don’t have a strong relationship with your coworkers or manager. Not everyone finds their job to be the highlight of their day, but you should expect to feel safe, comfortable, and respected in your workplace. Facing challenges at work can negatively impact other aspects of your life, so here are some strategies for coping with different workplace issues.

Pinpoint the Source of the Problem

Sometimes work can be too hectic to allow time for reflection. You may sense that something doesn’t feel right, but you haven’t yet thought about what it could be. Give yourself time to evaluate each area of your work and identify the main reasons for your dissatisfaction. Perhaps the main source of the problem is obvious to you, or maybe you need to consider it for a while. Common reasons for being unhappy at work include:

  • Finding no satisfaction in your work;
  • Feeling uncomfortable around your colleagues;
  • Working in an unsafe or unpleasant workspace;
  • Not feeling listened to by management;
  • Workplace bullying.

People struggle at work for many more reasons, so think about your specific situation and what could be causing the problem. Once you’ve done this, it will be easier to find a solution.

Seek Outside Support

It’s normal to lean on friends and family when going through tough times at work, but if you are facing bigger issues then it’s worth looking further afield for assistance. Sometimes, the situation may call for more serious intervention. You can find a Los Angeles employment lawyer to help you address a variety of concerns, such as workplace discrimination, harassment, or a hostile work environment. Having someone on your side to support can make reaching a fair solution less daunting. It is easy to feel alone as a single employee against a larger company, but there are ways to strengthen your side.

Communicate with Your Boss

Unless your boss is the reason for your difficulties, one of the first steps after identifying the issue is to bring it to their attention. Provide them with as much information as you are willing to share so they can come up with a possible solution. If you are feeling overworked and overwhelmed, for example, your boss may be able to make adjustments to let you recharge and recover. If another employee is the reason for your problem, bring this up confidentially with your boss and follow up with an email to keep a personal record of your conversation. This is a useful way to remember what has been said and when just in case you need to refer to it in the future.

The possible issues in a workplace are so varied and complicated that it’s impossible to design a blanket fix for all of them. However, finding another job could be the solution if the situation is becoming unbearable.
