Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella met with Indonesian President Joko Widodo, popularly known as Jokowi, at the presidential palace in Jakarta on Tuesday.
During the meeting, Nadella announced that Microsoft would invest $1.7 billion in artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing to help develop Indonesia’s AI infrastructure. This investment is considered the “single biggest investment value” in Microsoft’s 29-year history in the country.
Indonesia, with a population of around 280 million, is Southeast Asia’s largest economy and has a growing demand for data centers and AI technology.
Nadella expressed his excitement about the expanded investment, stating that Microsoft will bring the latest and greatest AI infrastructure to Indonesia and build data centers in the country soon. He emphasized Microsoft’s mission to empower every person and organization in Indonesia to take advantage of the next big AI wave.
In addition to the infrastructure investment, Satya Nadella announced that Microsoft would provide AI training for 2.5 million people across the ASEAN region by 2025, with 840,000 of those being in Indonesia alone. This training initiative aims to equip individuals with the necessary skills to benefit from the advancements in AI technology.
Since aggressively pursuing generative AI, beginning in 2023 with its $13 billion partnership with OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, Microsoft has received significant rewards from investors.
The company’s sales in the January–March period rose by 17 percent from the previous year, reaching $61.9 billion, with net profit increasing by 20 percent to $21.9 billion. The embrace of AI has boosted sales of Microsoft’s key cloud services, such as Azure, which have become the core of the company’s business under Nadella’s leadership.
Nadella’s visit to Indonesia comes just weeks after Apple CEO Tim Cook met with President Jokowi Widodo and President-elect Prabowo Subianto to explore ways to diversify supply chains away from China. Cook expressed Apple’s interest in potentially investing in manufacturing in Indonesia.
Following his visit to Indonesia, Nadella will continue his regional tour, traveling to Thailand and Malaysia to promote Microsoft’s AI technology. This tour highlights the increasing importance of AI and cloud computing in the region and the efforts of tech giants like Microsoft to establish a strong presence in these growing markets.
As Indonesia and other Southeast Asian countries continue to develop their digital infrastructure and adopt AI technology, investments from companies like Microsoft will play a crucial role in driving economic growth and technological advancement in the region.
