Warner made just seven runs in the final as Australia clinically chased down India’s 241. However, earlier knocks of two centuries and two fifties proved crucial in powering Australia’s campaign. Warner also made key contributions in the field, as Australia put on a complete performance to silence the Motera crowd in Ahmedabad.

The loss means India’s long wait for an ICC trophy has extended beyond a decade, despite high hopes that captain Rohit Sharma and star Virat Kohli could lift the trophy on home soil.

Warner has built a close connection with Indian fans over the years. His Bollywood dancing celebrations are now legendary. He even defended the tournament’s lighting against criticism from his own teammate, Glenn Maxwell.

After the final, Warner took to Instagram to expand on his appreciation: “Firstly, I want to say thank you to India for hosting an absolutely incredible World Cup.”
