Rohit Sharma Smashes World Record for Most International Sixes in Thrilling Win Over Afghanistan

Rohit Sharma blasted his way into the record books on Thursday in front of a jubilant home crowd at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium, becoming the batsman with the most sixes in international cricket across all formats.

The Indian captain smashed 4 huge sixes en route to a scintillating century to propel his side to a dominant 273-run chase and victory over Afghanistan in their second match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

With the feat, Sharma surpassed West Indies legend Chris Gayle’s long-standing record of 553 sixes in international cricket that had stood since 2016. Rohit now sits alone atop the leaderboard with 557 sixes and counting.

Blistering Start After Early World Cup Struggles

After being bowled out for a duck in India’s underwhelming opening match loss to Australia, Rohit roared back to form in spectacular fashion. He bludgeoned the Afghan bowlers to all parts of the ground, crunching 4 sixes and 11 fours in his 63-ball ton – the fastest World Cup century ever by an Indian.

The onslaught also marked Rohit’s 7th ODI World Cup century, the most by any Indian batsman in history. It was a captain’s knock when India desperately needed it after their top order collapsed for 0 runs in the last game.

Chasing 273, India were powered home by Rohit’s fearless strokeplay as he hammered 50 runs off just 30 balls during the powerplay. His attacking masterclass laid the platform for an emphatic 10-wicket victory. If you want you can also read- Rohit Smashes Record 7th World Cup Century, Surpasses Sachin and Kapil’s Milestones

Claims Top Spot for Most International Sixes

Rohit began the match with 292 sixes in ODIs, just 2 behind Chris Gayle’s international record of 553 sixes. But the ‘Hitman’ wasted no time taking sole ownership of the record.

By blasting 4 sixes in his 104-run opening stand with Shubman Gill, Rohit sailed past Gayle’s mark to cement his name in the record books. As India eye their first World Cup trophy since 2011, their talismanic captain is leading by example on the biggest stage.

Rohit’s awe-inspiring batting exploits prove why he is regarded as one of the most dangerous limited overs batsmen of all time, with his array of innovative shot-making and ability to hit sixes at will. As the runs and records continue to pile up, the Hitman shows no signs of slowing down. Additionally, you can also read about- Irfan Pathan Predicts Top Batter and Top Bowler of ODI World Cup 2023
