The Birth of Baby Bash

The athlete, who plays center for the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury, shared that their son was born on July 8th. During the interview, Brittney expressed her overwhelming joy and how the arrival of their son has already transformed her perspective on life.

“He is amazing,” Brittney said. “They say as soon as you see him, everything that you thought mattered just goes out the window, and that’s what happens.”

Cherelle Griner’s Pregnancy Journey

Cherelle Griner has been sharing glimpses of her pregnancy journey on social media, keeping their followers updated with heartfelt posts.

In April, she posted on Instagram, “Can’t believe we’re less than three months away from meeting our favorite human being,” along with the hashtag BabyGrinerComingSoon.

A New Chapter for Brittney Griner

The birth of their son marks a new and exciting chapter for Brittney Griner, who has faced significant challenges in recent years. In 2022, Brittney made international headlines when she was arrested in Russia for cannabis possession.

She was sentenced to nine years in a Russian prison but was released in December 2022 as part of a prisoner swap after serving ten months. Reflecting on her ordeal, Brittney shared that she feared her marriage to Cherelle might not survive her imprisonment.

“I might never see my parents again, and especially Pops [Griner’s father Ray] with his health issues,” she wrote in her memoir. “My basketball career would be over. I’d be in my early forties, out of shape, and have to find a new way to provide for my wife. And Relle [Cherelle]. She assured me she’d wait, but ten years was ridiculous.”

Preparing for the Paris Olympics

Despite the joy of welcoming their son, Brittney faces the bittersweet reality of having to leave him soon to compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics. The athlete, who previously won gold with the U.S. women’s national basketball team in the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games, is set to represent her country once again this summer.

It kind of sucks because I’ve got to leave, but at the same time, he’ll understand,” Brittney said, noting that she planned to have her son call her “Pops.” She added, “My whole phone is turned into him now,” reflecting her deep attachment and the difficulty of being away from him.

Public Reaction and Support

The news of baby Bash’s arrival has been met with widespread joy and support from fans and fellow athletes. Social media has been abuzz with congratulatory messages and well-wishes for the new parents.

The couple’s openness about their journey and challenges has resonated with many, further endearing them to the public.
