Wearable Panic Buttons: Why They’re Becoming Invaluable in Public Education

Wearable Panic Buttons

Traditional approaches to school safety are no longer enough to protect students and teachers from the threat of violence. School districts now have a responsibility to incorporate innovative technology into their safety plans. Enter the wearable panic button, a device that allows teachers and administrators to initiate a digital alert at the first sign of an emergency.

Unlike fixed security systems such as surveillance cameras, wall-mounted panic buttons, and metal detectors, wearable technology supports real-time responsiveness. School staff can signal for immediate help anywhere on campus, enabling them to de-escalate tense situations before they become violent. Wearable panic buttons also expedite response times in the event of medical emergencies or natural disasters and give teachers the authority to initiate school-wide lockdowns in active shooter situations.

The Growing Need for Tighter Security in Schools

Today, US public schools are vulnerable to a wide range of internal and external threats. What were once safe havens where children and teenagers could get the education they deserved have become unpredictable environments that require strict security measures and safety plans.

Shootings in K-12 schools have been on the rise for years. They’re perpetrated by existing and former students, as well as unauthorized visitors. There’s also been an increase in the number of students caught with firearms or other weapons on school property.

But the problem of school safety isn’t exclusive to gun-related violence. Teachers are at risk of physical and verbal assault inflicted by students suffering from mental health or behavioral issues. A study by the Pew Research Group found that 68% of teachers experience verbal abuse from students, and 21% report that this abuse happens several times a month.

Bullying is also a significant problem in public schools. Many students suffer silently from harassment, cyberbullying, and racism. This can lead to short- and long-term issues such as depression, anxiety, fear, absenteeism, and a decline in academic performance.

To combat these and other forms of violence, school districts must establish rigorous protocols that integrate state-of-the-art technology with comprehensive staff training. By integrating a school alert system equipped with wearable panic buttons and other safety tools, like vendor management and digital mapping tools, schools can shift from a reactive to a proactive safety strategy.

How Wearable Panic Buttons Improve Safety and Response

Time is of the essence during a school emergency. The faster security personnel, paramedics, or law enforcement respond, the less chance of injury or death.

One of the most powerful features of wearable panic buttons is mobile capability. Teachers and school administrators carry them at all times, enabling them to initiate an alert in real time. This is much more convenient than trying to locate a fixed alert button in a hectic situation.

In addition to mobility, wearable panic buttons offer customizable functionality, allowing schools to create unified safety standards and protocols. They also solve several problems posed by fixed alert systems.

Discreet Alert Capability

When teachers face threats of violence, it’s often better to initiate an alert without the perpetrator knowing. Doing so helps de-escalate the situation without creating additional stress or fear.

Wearable panic buttons allow for silent activation. They also make it easy for users to alert specific people depending on the type of emergency. Schools can program their wearables so teachers know how many times to push the button if they only need an administrator or if they need security personnel.

Reliable Connectivity

Cell phones may seem like adequate tools for communicating during an emergency. However, many schools have spotty connectivity. Plus, teachers usually keep their cell phones in their bags or desks, making it difficult to access them discreetly.

Many wearable panic buttons operate on a private network and don’t depend on a Wi-Fi signal, enabling them to function anywhere on campus. They even work in parking lots, exterior walkways, and bathrooms. This level of reliability can make all the difference when violence or a medical emergency occurs.

Collaboration with First Responders and Local Law Enforcement

Modern school safety plans involve the entire community. Many schools have close relationships with first responders and local law enforcement. Wearable panic button technology strengthens this connection.

Schools can link their wearable panic buttons to 911 dispatch centers and local police, so high-priority alerts are directed straight to them. In addition to receiving an emergency alert, 911 personnel and police can also pinpoint the exact location of an incident on the school campus. This is an invaluable resource in active shooter situations or major medical emergencies that require an immediate response.

Integration with Other Safety Systems

Effective school safety plans aren’t siloed. They consist of multiple layers working together to create a holistic safety ecosystem. The layers include unified protocols, staff training, and technology.

Leading providers of wearable panic buttons design them to seamlessly integrate with other safety technology to create a robust school alert system that protects students, staff, and the surrounding community. Panic buttons sync with digital mapping technology to enhance real-time location tracking. They also integrate with lockdown sirens, video cameras, and visitor management systems to enhance responsiveness and provide crucial information during an emergency.

School Safety Tech Supports Teacher Retention

School Safety Tech Supports Teacher Retention

Public school teachers in the US face challenges not felt by educators several decades ago. In addition to low wages and high workloads, teachers must confront the growing threat of violence. This isn’t something most education professionals bargained for when entering the sector, which is a significant reason for the nationwide teacher shortage.

Children are the future. Schools must do everything possible to enhance teacher retention and foster an environment that prioritizes learning and development at its core. School safety technology makes this possible.

Wearable panic buttons offer peace of mind to teachers who are worried about violence in their schools. A direct connection to security personnel and law enforcement allows them to focus on their students instead of constantly looking over their shoulders. Panic buttons and safety training also instill teachers with the confidence they need to de-escalate situations before they become violent.

A multilayered safety plan, backed by innovative technology, reduces anxiety for teachers, allowing them to concentrate on what they love to do. Schools that proactively protect students and staff often experience higher retention rates and can also leverage their safety culture to attract talented teachers seeking their next career move.

State Laws Making School Alert Systems Commonplace

In response to the growing number of shootings and violence on campuses, several states have passed laws requiring alert systems in schools. Alyssa’s Law, which requires silent panic alarms in public and secondary schools, has been passed in 10 states. The legislation is currently pending in other states.

Other state laws, such as Tennessee’s School Safety Act of 2023 and Senate Bill 11 in Texas, mandate emergency protocols, safety audits, and alert systems. In states where alert systems aren’t required, schools can apply for funding to help integrate safety technology to protect students and staff.

While state laws and funding are positive steps on the path to safer schools, there’s still plenty of work to do. Many school districts that aren’t required to implement alert systems are taking a proactive approach by working directly with safety technology providers to create multilayered safety plans. By doing so, they’re cutting down on school violence before it starts and putting emergency response front and center, so students receive the very best education possible.
