Threads Hits 150M Users Monthly, Zuckerberg Reveals

Threads Hits 150M Users Monthly

Threads, the text-based conversation app launched by Meta to rival Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter), has reached a significant milestone. According to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Threads now boasts over 150 million monthly active users, marking an impressive growth trajectory since its debut in July 2023.

User Growth and Future Expectations

The app’s user base has consistently expanded, with the latest figure surpassing the 130 million users reported in February and the 100 million users in October. Zuckerberg expressed optimism about Threads’ trajectory during the company’s recent earnings call, stating that it aligns with his hopes for the platform. He had previously set an ambitious goal for Threads to become Meta’s next billion-user social network, joining the ranks of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger.

Capitalizing on User Migration Trends

Threads has emerged as a strong contender among alternative platforms such as Mastodon and Bluesky, which are benefiting from the increasing trend of users seeking alternatives to X. The chaos and controversies surrounding X under Musk’s ownership have prompted many users to explore other social media options, creating opportunities for Threads to attract and retain a substantial user base.

Since its launch, Meta has been diligently working on enhancing Threads’ features to provide a compelling user experience. The app now offers a fully functional web application, keyword search, trending topics, an edit button, voice posts, and support for multiple accounts. Additionally, Meta has leveraged its existing user base by promoting Threads posts on its popular photo and video-sharing app, Instagram, likely contributing to the app’s growth.

Interoperability and Fediverse Integration

In a significant move towards interoperability, Meta has begun allowing Threads users in select countries, such as the United States, Canada, and Japan, to share their posts to the fediverse. The fediverse is a network of decentralized social networks, including Mastodon, that can communicate with each other through the ActivityPub protocol. This feature enables Threads users to interact with a wider community beyond the app’s user base and provides the option to transfer content to other services in the future.

API Development and Partner Collaborations

Meta is actively developing the Threads API to empower creators, developers, and brands to build unique integrations, manage their presence on the platform, and share fresh content with their communities. The API currently supports authentication, post publishing, content retrieval, reply management, and insights. Meta is collaborating with partners such as Grabyo, Hootsuite, Social News Desk, Sprinklr, Sprout Social, and Techmeme to refine the API, with plans to make it broadly available by the end of June.

Threads is also exploring a feature that allows select users to manually or automatically archive their posts after a specified period. This initiative aims to address user privacy concerns and provide greater control over the visibility and longevity of shared content.

Conclusion

With over 150 million monthly active users, Threads has demonstrated remarkable growth and resilience in the competitive social media landscape. Meta’s commitment to enhancing the app’s features, promoting interoperability, and collaborating with partners positions Threads as a strong contender in the race to attract users seeking alternatives to X. As Meta continues to invest in generative AI and integrate its capabilities across its suite of apps, it remains to be seen how these advancements will shape the future of Threads and the broader social media ecosystem.
