How to Protect Teenagers From Online Scams?

Protect Teenagers From Online Scams

Today, online scams have been taken to a whole new level. One group that has been targeted the most is teenagers. This group is one of the heavy users of the internet and can easily be manipulated for various reasons.

Parents and guardians need to understand that this problem is not what it used to be (although it has always been dangerous). The scammers have improved their tactics, and their new methods have proven to be more effective, considering the number of teenagers who have been defrauded online.

Parents and everyone concerned need to step up their game to protect their children and make the internet a safe place for them.

In this article, we will discuss six ways to protect teenagers from online scams.

1. Encourage Your Children to Take Action

When your child informs you of any message that feels like a scam, you may be tempted to read the message yourself. However, don’t. Allow them to read it to you. Teens are very protective of their phones and may not be comfortable seeing them in the hands of another person, even a close one.

After that, ask them what they think about the situation. Let them know that they can use online resources to understand who is contacting them. Nuwber, for instance, is a people search engine teens can use to understand who they are dealing with. Whether they have the scammer’s full name, phone number, email address, or address, this information can help them find out all they need to know.

The reason why it is important is because you will not always be there to check and ask about their online activities. But if your teens know the right action to take in the event of scam messages, then you can go to bed with your two eyes closed.

2. Educate Yourself

You cannot give out what you don’t have. If you want to protect your kids from internet fraud, you should be equipped with all the necessary armor for protection. In this case, the armor needed is all the information about the types of fraud and how fraudsters operate.

The way they operated a few years ago has changed to some extent. Hence, the first step in protecting your children would be to know all the possible scams they could encounter. Some of them are:

  • Romance scams
  • Scholarship scams
  • Shopping scams
  • Phishing
  • Tech support scams
  • Social media scams

And the list continues.

Scammers’ methods of operation are simple and consistent. They start by liking posts, commenting, or sending direct messages. Then, if a teen takes the bait, they begin the scamming process.

3. Spot the Risk Places

To protect teens from the negative aspects of the internet, we need to identify what is harmful and understand the motivations of those who stand behind it. Spotting the points of danger is one crucial thing you should learn to protect your kids from online scammers.

Teenagers normally don’t use the same apps we do and may not visit the same sites as us. While we may use the internet mostly for business-related matters, for teenagers, it is primarily about fun. Therefore, it’s important to spot those websites and apps where young adults might likely be scammed.

4. Talk to Your Teens

When it is time to do the talking, don’t make the mistake of trying to impose a decision on your teen because of the fear of the dangers you have discovered. You will need to talk to them in such a way so they could understand the danger themselves.

Tell them about the websites they should not visit and what they should do if they must visit them. Encourage them to talk to you when a stranger starts liking their pictures, commenting on their posts, or sending them direct messages.

If they deal with such problems alone, they might make the mistake of trusting just everyone, which will lead to serious consequences, such as identity theft, money loss, or something worse.

5. Respect Your Teens’ Privacy

When trying to protect our teens from online scams, we sometimes directly or indirectly lead them into the hands of the very people we are trying to protect them from by invading their privacy. They may be young, but just like us, they don’t like their privacy being invaded.

We sometimes want to check their phones to see the people they are talking to or the apps they are using. While we may discover one or two things about their internet activities, we will also make them more secretive. Teens will always find ways to hide what they don’t want us to see on their devices.

So, don’t be that person who snoops on their child’s phone. Instead, encourage them to open up when they feel someone who is talking to them could be a scammer.

6. Set Up Their Phones

Whenever you buy a new phone or PC for your kid, it is important to set it up. If you do not have the technical knowledge for this, you can get the help of a professional.

Install all the necessary apps and restrict access to websites that you think are unsafe for your child. From time to time, make sure you update the software.

Don’t forget to tell your teens to download an antivirus and VPN. This will protect them from clicking on suspicious links, going to malicious websites, and, most importantly, interacting with dangerous individuals.

Parting Thoughts

Protecting teenagers from online scams is every parent’s responsibility. Teens are young and inexperienced, while adults can and must know how to deal with situations that their kids might encounter.

The tips we have discussed above are quite simple to follow, but more importantly, your teen will be glad that they have you watching their back. Be a friend to your child, otherwise, they will make costly mistakes that you will have to pay for.
