Canadian Hero Nick Taylor Aims for Repeat at RBC Canadian Open

Nick Taylor Aims Repeat RBC Canadian Open

In June 2023, Nick Taylor etched his name into Canadian sports history by sinking an unforgettable 72-foot eagle putt on the fourth playoff hole at the Oakdale Golf & Country Club. This stunning victory made him the first Canadian to win the nation’s prestigious RBC Canadian Open since Pat Fletcher in 1954.

As the 2024 RBC Canadian Open gets underway, Taylor is in the spotlight as he prepares to defend his title in front of a home audience that is eager to see another historic performance.

The Marquee Trio

Taylor finds himself in a star-studded group for the opening rounds, joining 2019 and 2022 tournament champion Rory McIlroy and fellow Canadian Taylor Pendrith.

Pendrith recently won the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, becoming the latest Canadian to triumph on the PGA TOUR. The anticipation is palpable as these three talented golfers prepare to showcase their skills.

Inspiration and Excitement

Pendrith admired Taylor’s victory last year, calling it inspiring. “It’s a huge event, and to see Nick win last year was unbelievable; it was super inspiring,” Pendrith said during a pre-tournament press conference. “It’s amazing to see him do it and end the drought in that fashion. I still get goosebumps watching the video.”

McIlroy also shared his enthusiasm for competing in Canada, recalling his first victory there in 2019. “The place was buzzing. The Raptors were about to win an NBA championshipMcIlroy recalled that when he attended the Canadian Open for the first time, he was “blown away by just the fans’ enthusiasm; it was such a great atmosphere to play in.”

Canadian Fan Energy

McIlroy likened the energy of Canadian golf fans to that of a hockey game despite admitting he has never attended one. “It feels like you’re playing in that sort of hockey environment, especially with the Rink hole,” he said. “I feel like I get good support most places that we go play, but it’s just for whatever reason it’s just a little bit extra here in Canada.”

Nick Taylor’s Confidence and Legacy

Taylor’s historic win has boosted his confidence significantly, leading to his victory at the TPC Scottsdale in early February. Reflecting on his achievements, Taylor said, “I’ve seen the replay enough now that I have that visual almost now instead of my perception. Yeah, I’ve seen so many angles now; it’s cool to see different people’s reactions.”

Golf Canada has commemorated Taylor’s historic achievement with a limited edition Nick Taylor bobblehead, with proceeds supporting the First Tee program. Taylor finds joy in reliving his iconic putt, noting, “I feel when my wife and I see it, we find a different person to look at and see how they reacted, which is pretty fun.”

Embracing the Challenge

As the defending champion, Taylor is prepared to handle the pressure that comes with the spotlight. “The biggest change, I would say, since last year is being recognized more in the context of a golf course. Now, especially at the Canadian Open – so yeah, it’s a lot of pictures and signatures,” Taylor said.

He remains focused and ready to embrace the challenge, understanding that pressure is a privilege. “I think our crowds will be pretty big the next couple of days with Rory – who always has that following, and playing with Pendy. So, I’m looking forward to that a lot,” he added.

As the RBC Canadian Open gets underway, all eyes will be on Nick Taylor. With the confidence gained from his historic victory and the support of Canadian fans, Taylor is poised to defend his title and continue his remarkable journey in professional golf.
