Bezos Earth Fund on Tuesday declared a $2 billion pledge to combat climate change through landscape restoration and agriculture system transformation.
In a statement, the fund’s founder, Jeff Bezos, stated, “Our commitment today supports a three-fold imperative — we must conserve what we have, restore what we’ve lost, and grow what we need in harmony with nature.” The $2 billion pledge made at COP26 is part of a $10 billion pledge made earlier this year by the Amazon founder to spend by 2030 to combat climate change.
The Bezos Earth Fund intends to invest $1 billion mostly in the United States and Africa, planting trees to protect deteriorating landscapes and rebuilding carbon-capture zones. The remaining $1 billion will go toward modernizing agricultural systems in order to boost crop yields, reduce food waste, and encourage people to eat more plants. Indigenous communities would receive $1.7 billion in funding, according to plans.
At COP26 on Monday, a group of countries and corporate donors announced plans to invest $1.7 billion over the next four years to help Indigenous people and safeguard biodiverse tropical forests.
The money will be used to assist “activities to secure, strengthen and protect Indigenous Peoples’ and local communities’ land and resource rights,” as well as other types of aid, such as for group activities, according to the US, UK, Norway, Germany, the Netherlands, and 17 other private funders.
In a statement, the donors said, “We call on other donors to significantly increase their support to this important agenda.” It didn’t say which communities will benefit from the money.
The Ford Foundation, one of the founders, told The Associated Press that the governments will contribute around $1 billion, with the balance coming from philanthropies. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ Bezos Earth Fund and former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg’s Bloomberg Philanthropies are among the funders, in addition to the Ford Foundation.
