How to Deal with Childhood Trauma? Know the Tips
Childhood is when our emotions begin to blossom, develop, and branch out into manifestations. It’s also the age where a trauma can linger for a long time, no matter how minor it may have seemed to the person who inflicted it on us. It’s the time of year when our emotional manifestations at home, as well as how our feelings are reciprocated, have a profound and lasting impact on us – some of which we will carry with us for the rest of our lives. Childhood trauma frequently appears as if previous affection is being taken away as a punishment for an activity, and this impacts our emotional development even as we get older.
Childhood trauma can take many forms, but it usually begins at home. Screaming matches, silence, retribution, revenge, or harsh punishment are common. As a result, we learn how to cope with such disputes from the adults we observe dealing with them in a particular manner. In a recent Instagram post, Psychologist Nicole LePera explained the causes and effects of childhood trauma. She penned, “Witnessing emotionally immature parents who are unable to deal with disagreement has long-term consequences for us. It also had an effect on our nervous system, causing us to become immobile, become excessively emotionally reactive/unable to reason, or disassociate (leave our body during conflict).”
Conflict, according to Nicole, is defined as a clash of perspectives, which occurs frequently in human relationships and is a natural component of human nature. Conflict, on the other hand, does not always have a bad effect on relationships. Learning to respect our partners’ ideas and accept them for who they are can sometimes help us connect more with them.
When it comes to dealing with conflict, Nicole believes that dialogue is the most effective method. It is critical that you communicate your feelings to the other person. It’s also crucial to discuss with your partner how conflict was handled in your different homes and how you were conditioned. “Talk to your partner if a quarrel brings up strong, powerful emotions (particularly, feelings of abandonment). Share with each other how you dealt with conflict in your homes “Nicole went on to say.
