Will It Be McCarthy’s Time? Vikings Draft Young QB in First Round

Vikings draft mccarthy young qb first round

Former Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy has found his NFL home after months of intense speculation and polarizing opinions from analysts about where he might land in the draft.

The Minnesota Vikings made a bold move, trading up with the New York Jets to select McCarthy with the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. This makes McCarthy the highest-drafted quarterback in the storied history of Michigan football.

McCarthy’s path to the NFL has been extraordinary. The talented signal-caller helped guide the Wolverines to a national championship victory in 2023, capping off a remarkable two-year stint as the starting quarterback with an incredible 27-1 record.

His poise under pressure, decision-making abilities, and leadership on the field caught the attention of NFL scouts and analysts, though opinions on his pro potential varied widely.

“J.J. McCarthy really wanted to be a Minnesota Viking,” Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell said jubilantly after making the draft-day trade. “He can’t wait to get here and get to work with our team.”

McCarthy’s first-round selection continues an impressive streak for the University of Michigan football program, which has now produced at least one first-round NFL draft pick for six consecutive years.

He also etched his name in Michigan lore, becoming the first Wolverines quarterback to be taken in the first round since his own former coach, Jim Harbaugh, was selected by the Chicago Bears with the 26th overall pick in 1987.

Additionally, McCarthy is the first offensive skill position player from Michigan to go in the opening round since wide receiver Braylon Edwards was taken 3rd overall in 2005.

Harbaugh, who now serves as the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers in the NFL, couldn’t contain his excitement and pride for his former pupil. “That’s where he wanted to go. That’s where he had his heart set. I’m just so happy for him,” an emotional Harbaugh told the Associated Press after the pick. “I love him like a son. I was praying and pulling for it to work out the way he wanted it to work out, and the stars aligned. Minnesota got themselves a great player.”

During McCarthy’s stellar 2023 campaign, he completed an impressive 72.3% of his passes, which ranked 6th nationally among all FBS quarterbacks. He threw for 2,991 yards and 22 touchdowns, while only tossing 4 interceptions all season long. His pass efficiency rating of 158.6 placed him 9th in the country.

McCarthy’s exceptional senior season performance earned him Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year honors, as well as MVP recognition at the Rose Bowl national semifinal game.

While McCarthy didn’t put up the gaudy passing numbers of some other top quarterback prospects like USC’s Caleb Williams or Washington’s Michael Penix Jr., analysts praised his ability to elevate his team’s performance and make critical plays in big moments. His impact went beyond just statistics.

“J.J. is a winner,” said FOX Sports analyst Joel Klatt emphatically. “What I appreciated most about covering him over the last three years — and I got to see every iteration, from true freshman getting spot playing time all the way to being the starter last year on the national championship team — I love his selflessness, but also his maturation as a quarterback. That doesn’t get talked about enough.”

Klatt specifically highlighted McCarthy’s remarkable efficiency and decision-making on crucial third-down plays as a strength that will translate well to the pro game. “That was remarkable last year. This guy is incredible in those situations. He’s confident. He knows when to use his legs, when to get the ball out. Those third-down abilities are going to serve him very well at the next level.”

During the pre-draft process, McCarthy revealed that teams frequently asked about Michigan’s run-heavy offensive approach in games like the 2022 matchup versus Penn State, when the Wolverines ran the ball 32 consecutive times without attempting a pass in the second half after taking a big lead.

“That was a big one that came up,” McCarthy admitted at the NFL Scouting Combine. “It was kind of the ability, especially that example, to let them know, hey, my teammates, the receivers specifically, were not very excited when Coach (Sherrone) Moore was saying, ‘Hey, it’s gonna be one of those games.’ But just letting (NFL teams) know, the process of the approach I took during that time of just saying, ‘Hey, guys, this is a huge part in our quest to become national champions.’ And not necessarily saying that I was the only selfless one, but telling the teams, that my teammates were very selfless in that situation. Just explaining situations like that, and just ultimately letting them know the first thing of three things about me is I’m the ultimate team guy, want to win games, and I love this game more than anything.”

McCarthy’s selfless, team-first attitude and ability to put egos aside for the greater good clearly resonated with NFL evaluators. His mindset is reflected in comments from his former coach Harbaugh, who raved about McCarthy’s mental makeup last year.

“He’s the one who plays quarterback of all the quarterbacks in the draft,” Harbaugh told reporters during the NFL owners meetings. “There are great quarterbacks in the draft, but I think he plays quarterback the best of any quarterback in the draft.”

Now that he has landed with the Vikings, McCarthy has the opportunity to prove his championship pedigree and well-rounded game can translate to the professional ranks. With an offensive-minded head coach in O’Connell and talented weapons like Justin Jefferson, Minnesota will provide an excellent environment for McCarthy to continue developing his skillset.

As he embarks on this new chapter, McCarthy carries with him the invaluable lessons, experience and winning mentality forged during his decorated tenure at Michigan.

His ability to lead, make sound decisions, put the team first and deliver in the clutch has earned respect from coaches, teammates and analysts alike. The Vikings are getting more than just a talented quarterback – they’re getting a fierce competitor with the right mindset to elevate their franchise.
