1534: Appointment of George van Egmond

Appointment of George van Egmond

On October 26, 1534, Emperor Charles V chose George van Egmond to be the Bishop of Utrecht. Utrecht was an important city in what is now the Netherlands.

Being a bishop was both a religious and political job at that time. The bishop helped run the city and the church. Charles V picked George van Egmond because he thought he would be loyal to him.

This appointment was important because it showed how much power Charles V had over both the church and government. It also helped keep Utrecht under the control of the Habsburg family, which ruled much of Europe at that time.

1850: Discovery of Northwest Passage

On October 26, 1850, Robert McClure found something sailors had been looking for for hundreds of years. He saw a way to sail between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through the Arctic. This was called the Northwest Passage.

McClure was on a ship looking for other explorers who had gotten lost. While doing this, he saw a route between Banks Island and Melville Island. This was the first time anyone had seen the complete Northwest Passage.

On October 26, 1894, German Emperor Wilhelm II made big changes in his government. He fired two important leaders: Chancellor Leo von Caprivi and Prime Minister Botho zu Eulenburg.
