On May 10, 1503, the explorer Christopher Columbus found the Cayman Islands during one of his trips. He named them “Las Tortugas,” which means “The Turtles” in Spanish, because he saw many sea turtles there. These islands are still known today for their beautiful beaches and clear waters.

John Harrison was awarded for inventing the nautical longitude clock

In the old days, sailors had a hard time knowing where they were in the ocean. They could figure out how far north or south they were, but not how far east or west. John Harrison invented a special clock that helped solve this problem. The British government awarded him a sizable prize of £10,000 on May 10, 1765, for his invention.
