Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, and Vice President Joe Biden have a tense relationship. Musk appears to be irritated by the fact that Biden practically never mentions Tesla, even when discussing electric vehicles, albeit the reasons for this omission are unknown.
Now, a story from CNBC gives some light on why this is the case, albeit Musk’s response may not help speed up the process. According to those familiar with the situation, the White House has no imminent plans to invite Musk to any meeting with senior executives, fearing that he may “embarrass the president.”
Given Musk’s strange sense of humor and that one time when he made fun of Biden for “still sleeping,” a likely allusion to Trump’s quips about “Sleepy Joe” Biden, such suspicions aren’t wholly unfounded. Musk compared White House staffers to NPCs (non-player characters — a gaming term for computer-controlled in-game characters) who are unable to say the phrase “Tesla” in another tweet.
Musk apparently responded to CNBC’s request for comment with an email containing two “roll on the floor laughing” emoji: “They have nothing to be concerned about,” he added.
“I’d do the right thing,” Musk stated.
The Tesla CEO also addressed his disagreements with the Biden administration, claiming that they aren’t “exactly” a feud.
“Biden has consistently ignored Tesla at every turn, falsely claiming that GM dominates the electric car sector when, in fact, Tesla produced over 300,000 electric vehicles last quarter and GM manufactured only 26,” he said CNBC. He added, though, that he has “nothing against Biden otherwise.”
Biden did highlight Tesla’s importance in the expanding U.S. electric vehicle business earlier this month, calling it “our nation’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer.”
According to CNBC, it’s unclear whether Musk will visit the White House anytime soon, while some in the administration are allegedly trying to get Musk in to talk about Biden’s $1 trillion infrastructure plan. Perhaps the mythical meeting will finally happen if Musk refrains from making Twitter jokes for a bit.
