How to Earn Backlinks Without Sending Cold Emails

How to Earn Backlinks Without Sending Cold Emails

I sent my first batch of link requests to 50 editors. 23 replied. One of them said no. The rest said nothing at all. That taught me something useful, but not what I expected. The pitch wasn’t bad. The problem was that I had nothing worth linking to. I was asking strangers to vouch for a blog with no traffic, no data, and no name attached to it. No subject line fixes that.

So I stopped asking. Everything below is what replaced it, and the order I’d do it in if I were starting a blog from zero links tomorrow.

If you want the mechanics of why cold outreach stalls at scale, I’ve written about what happens to cold emails separately. This piece is about the other road.

What “Earning” a Link Actually Means

An earned link is one someone adds because your page made their page better. You didn’t ask. They needed a source, found yours, and used it.

That distinction matters more than it used to. Google has spent years quietly turning the volume down on links. Gary Illyes said in 2023 that people overestimate link importance and that links haven’t been a top-three signal for some time, and at a 2024 conference he added that Google needs very few links to rank pages and has made them less important over the years.

Fewer links needed, but the right ones still move you. A handful of relevant editorial links beats a hundred bought ones. If the basics are fuzzy, start with what backlinks are in SEO and why backlinks still matter, then come back.

Here’s the part that keeps me patient: Ahrefs looked at over a billion pages and found 66.31% had no external backlinks at all. Two-thirds of the web has nothing. You don’t need to beat the internet. You need to beat that.

The Three Things that Actually Brought Links in

1. One page that holds numbers people need

Writers link to numbers. Not opinions, not guides, not your best paragraph but numbers.

So I built pages that exist to be cited. A survey of my own readers. A count of something in my niche that nobody had bothered counting. A pricing comparison I update every quarter. Each one answers a question a writer will need answered while they’re mid-draft and short on time.

Two rules I learned the hard way. Put the number in the H2 so it shows up in a search snippet. And put the date on it, because a stat with no date gets skipped.

2. Answering questions where they’re already being asked

Reddit, Quora, niche forums, Facebook groups, Slack communities. People post questions there every day that I’ve already written 1,500 words about.

I answer properly. Full answer in the comment, no teasing, no “check my blog.” Then a link at the end if it genuinely adds something the comment didn’t cover.

Most of these links are nofollow, so don’t expect direct ranking value. What you get is the person who reads that thread six months later, copies your stat, and cites it from their own site. That second link is the following one. The forum answer is the seed, not the harvest.

3. Being a source journalists can quote

This one changed for everyone recently. HARO, the old free service that emailed you journalist requests, was folded into Connectively and shut down on December 9, 2024. The model didn’t die with it. Source of Sources, launched by HARO’s original founder, runs free daily digests, and Qwoted and Featured cover higher-authority outlets. Help a B2B Writer is free and B2B-only, and the #journorequest tag on X and LinkedIn moves fastest.

What works when I pitch: reply inside the first hour, write a quote the journalist can paste without editing, and say something specific enough that no AI tool would have produced it. Three sentences. No pitch deck. No, “I’d love to hop on a call.”

This isn’t cold email. The journalist asked first. That’s the whole difference.

The Case Study

Showing Referring Domains Data Using SemRush

Here’s how one page performed for me.

  • Page: https://editorialge.com/tips-to-find-stock-images/
  • Published: April, 2023
  • What it was: a how-to guide for finding stock images
  • Referring domains earned: 79 across 40 months
  • Who linked: almost half of them have the authority score of 50+ and more.
  • Outreach emails sent: 0

The pattern I want you to notice is the shape of it, not the size. Nothing happened for 18 weeks. The first link came from Gravatar, though it was a nofollow. After that, the page picked up links roughly 3 to 4 per month without me touching it, because each new link made it easier to find, which produced the next one.

That’s the compounding effect I keep coming back to, and it’s the same reason content marketing pays off over time rather than on launch day.

The 30/60/90 Day Plan for a Blog With Zero Links

Days 1 to 30: build the asset

Pick one topic you can own. Not a category. One question.

Publish your citable page. Original numbers if you can gather them; a careful roundup with sources if you can’t. Add a short “how we collected this” note near the top, because that’s what makes a cautious writer willing to cite you.

Set up your profiles on Source of Sources and Qwoted and a saved search for #journorequest. Fill in a real bio with a real name and photo. Anonymous sources don’t get quoted.

Expect zero links this month. That’s normal.

Days 31 to 60: get in front of people

Answer three community questions a week. Pick threads with existing traffic, not brand-new posts with two comments.

Send five journalist responses a week. Track which ones land. My hit rate started near nothing and improved once I stopped padding the quotes.

Start collecting emails now, even at ten subscribers a week. A small list is the cheapest distribution you’ll ever own, and list building for beginners is a better use of an hour than another outreach template. Later, a simple automation workflow can carry each new post to that list without you thinking about it.

Your first one or two links usually show up here. Often from somewhere you never targeted.

The 30-60-90 Day Plan for a Blog With Zero Links

Days 61 to 90: repeat what worked, cut what didn’t

Open Search Console and your backlink tool. Look at which page earned links and which method delivered them. Then do more of that one thing.

Update the citable page with fresh numbers and change the date. Updated pages get re-found by writers who bookmarked them.

Publish a second citable page on a nearby topic and link the two together. Now you have a small cluster, and internal links push authority from the page that earns to the page that needs it.

By day 90 the honest target is a handful of referring domains, not fifty. That’s enough to move a page that’s stuck on page two.

What I’d Skip

Directory submissions. Comment links. Any service selling “50 DA 60 backlinks.” Guest posts on sites that publish 40 articles a week about everything.

I’d also skip worrying about whether links are dying. They aren’t, but they share the stage now with engagement and brand signals, which I’ve covered in user signals vs backlinks.

And if you still want an outreach channel running alongside all this, that’s fine. Just run it well rather than blindly, using proper cold email strategies instead of a scraped list.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. How long before I earn my first backlink without outreach?

For a new blog, somewhere between six weeks and four months. The first one is the slowest. It needs someone to find your page organically or through a community answer, which can’t happen until the page is indexed and visible for something.

2. Do nofollow links from Reddit and Quora help?

Not directly for rankings. They help by putting your page in front of people who do publish. Treat them as distribution, and judge them by referral traffic, not by link value.

3. Do I need to be a real expert to answer journalist requests?

You need direct experience with the specific thing they asked about. A journalist writing about small-blog SEO wants someone running a small blog. Say what you actually did and what the result was. That beats credentials most of the time.

4. Can I earn backlinks without publishing original data?

Yes, but it’s slower. Free templates, calculators, and thorough comparison pages all earn links. Original data is just the fastest route because it’s the one thing another writer can’t produce themselves in ten minutes.

Where I’d Start Tomorrow

If you only do one thing this week, count something nobody in your niche has counted and publish the number with the date on it. Everything else in this plan feeds off that one page.

What’s the number in your niche that nobody has bothered to measure yet? That’s your first link.
