Microsoft and OpenAI have a strong relationship, allowing the Redmond giant’s AI assistant, Copilot, to utilize cutting-edge AI models.
Some features are only available with a payment plan, and Microsoft provides Copilot Pro for those seeking additional capabilities from their assistants. Microsoft has announced that the GPT-4 Turbo model of Copilot is now available for free, eliminating the need for a Copilot Pro plan.
Use of the GPT-4 Turbo Model from Copilot is Now Free
Mikhail Parakhin revealed the information in a post on X. Mikhail is knowledgeable about Copilot, and he has previously provided information on numerous Copilot-related news stories. This time, he declared that everyone can now use Copilot’s GPT-4 Turbo models for free; no payment is needed.
After quite some work, GPT4-Turbo replaced GPT-4 in the Copilot free tier. Pro users can still choose the older model, if prefer (there is a toggle).

Based on the comments, it seems that if you have Copilot in either Creative or Precise mode, the GPT-4 Turbo will activate. For this reason, if you wish to test GPT-4 Turbo, be sure to toggle on these options.
Copilot is Embracing the New and Discarding the Old
What could be the reason for Microsoft’s sudden act of generosity? Rumors are circulating that OpenAI is developing a new version of its GPT model, possibly coming out soon. If this information is accurate, it would explain why Microsoft has recently made GPT-4 Turbo available for free, possibly to pave the way for a newer version.
Over the course of Copilot’s history, this pattern may occur frequently. Copilot Pro members will have access to the most up-to-date technology, and when something new is available, the previous model moves to the free tier. This results in a good balance where free users can access powerful tools, while paying users can get a glimpse into the latest developments in AI.
