BNB: What makes it different from Bitcoin?

BNB vs Bitcoin

The Binance Coin (BNB) is one of the most essential digital coins from the crypto realm. Binance launched it with the initial goal of facilitating trading operations. Each digital coin has some crucial features that make it stand out from the others, and this also occurs with BNB. Some of the factors that make BNB appealing are the fact that it supports cutting-edge decentralized applications (dApps) and that it offers discounted trading fees.

It is always a good idea to compare digital coins with each other, to discover especially what each of them has to offer. Only in this way can you make a better decision for yourself and see if a particular digital coin is suitable for your needs and preferences. In this article, we will analyze the features of BNB in comparison with the crypto leader, Bitcoin (BTC). Keep reading to learn more.

What is the Binance Coin, BNB?

The Binance Coin took its first steps into the world in 2017, when it was developed as an ERC-20 token using the Ethereum platform. To launch the Ethereum platform, this digital coin went through an Initial Coin Offering (ICO), where the creators of BNB launched 200 million tokens. From this amount, 80 million was distributed to the founding team, 20 million was allocated to angel investors, and 100 million was sold.

The first use case of BNB was to pay the trading fees on the Binance platform, but soon after, it expanded further and catered to a broader variety of applications. Over the years, BNB has improved its offerings, and it has even released its blockchain to offer this digital token the needed environment to thrive. Since the launch of its own blockchain, the capabilities of BNB have increased to a great extent, and this digital coin has also started to be used for decentralized applications, not only for discounts on trading fees.

Then, this blockchain was renamed to BNB Smart Chain, which also allowed the creation of smart contracts.

What are the Main Differences Between Bitcoin and BNB?

Transaction speed

The two digital coins are very different regarding their transaction speed, and it is essential to pay attention to this to discover the best cryptocurrency for your needs. In comparison with Bitcoin, BNB has a bonus, as it executes transactions within seconds. Things take longer for Bitcoin, whose transaction time can range from 10 minutes to an hour.

Purpose

These two digital coins have different purposes. For instance, Bitcoin wanted to serve as an alternative to fiat money and bring decentralization. In this way, the world would finally have an alternative to central financial institutions. This all occurs without needing any intermediary, which brings more control to the game, as people can better access their own money without requiring any intermediaries.

Instead, the primary purpose of BNB was to facilitate crypto transactions and offer them a way to cut some of their trading fees. In this way, trading can be easier for them and turn into a more flexible process.

Supply

Bitcoin and BNB also differ in terms of supply. Bitcoin has a capped supply of 21 million tokens, which makes it a scarce asset. This can increase the value of BTC over time, as a limited supply can make BTC more appealing for a large variety of investors. For the case of BNB, a supply of 200 million units was issued, and a portion is burned regularly to reduce the supply of this digital token.

Stability

Bitcoin is the largest digital coin by market cap, which makes it a more stable solution than the others. It is the first digital coin ever developed, and it has experienced many ups and downs over the years. However, it has still managed to maintain its competition and power in the crypto sphere.

BNB has a direct relationship with the Binance platform. This means that any change in Binance’s policy could directly impact BNB’s value.

Scalability

The two digital coins also differ in terms of scalability. BTC can process around seven transactions per second (TPS), which is a low percentage compared with the other digital coins that have improved their scalability issues. This is why the Binance Smart Chain is able to handle around 160 TPS. This gives BNB a huge advantage and makes it more suitable for use cases that require a high volume of operations.

Transaction fees

Transaction fees vary between digital coins. The Bitcoin platform is known for having higher fees that depend on trading congestion and can range from $1 to $20. This doesn’t really occur in the case of BNB, which has lower fees that can range from $0.05 to 0.50.

This makes a great difference between these two crucial digital coins. This also implies that Bitcoin could be a better idea when making significant transactions, but it might not be ideal for small transactions. On the other hand, things are opposed in the case of BNB, which offers a cheaper alternative to individuals worldwide, and because of that, this crypto can be perfect for small transactions.

Consensus mechanism

Bitcoin uses a Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus mechanism, where miners are responsible for validating transactions and adding new blocks. For their effort, they receive rewards in the form of BTC. One downside of this practice is that the PoW employs a high electrical consumption, which is why this consensus mechanism has been criticized over the years.

BNB functions with different consensus mechanisms, which include a Proof-of-Authority (PoA) and a Proof-of-Stake (PoS). This combination bears the name of Proof-of-Staked Authority (PoSA), which offers improved solutions, as it is energy-efficient and more convenient.

Last words

There are many differences between Bitcoin and BNB, and it is a good idea to be aware of them in order to discover new investment opportunities. Additionally, as both digital currencies have advantages, investors can consider them to benefit from diversification.
