Blackjack Basic Strategy: Your FAQ Roadmap

Blackjack Basic Strategy

Although there is a degree of luck involved when playing blackjack, there are ways in which you can maximize your chances of winning. The main way in which this is achieved is through the use of a basic blackjack strategy.

A strategy chart has been created, which can be followed. This provides players with the ability to make informed decisions about their hand and the likelihood of being hit with another card.

Blackjack Basic Strategy Chart Origins

The chart can be dated back to the 1950s and its inventors were four US Army engineers. The masterminds of it were Roger Baldwin, Wilbert Cantey, Herbert Maisel, and James McDermott, who developed it to show which decisions would be more advantageous to make when trying to reach 21 or as close to it as possible without going over from a given hand.

From a very small and humble origin, it has grown to be what so many swear by. Best blackjack players and professionals have used it as a reference when mastering the game, though even casual players can use it.

There is no ban on using it in a casino or when playing online. In fact, it’s a tool that many use when they play the various live blackjack variants that are available. They can quickly refer back and forth to it, providing an individual with the information they need to make a decision.

How is a Blackjack Chart read?

Players need to understand how to read a blackjack chart if they want to use it effectively. Thankfully, there are a few tips that can make it easier to read and use:

  • Hands and Dealer’s Upcard – the player’s hand will be located on the left axis while the dealer’s upcard will appear across the top. You will need to work out the value of your hand and then read across to see what the chart recommends.
  • Color-Coded Cells – Many blackjack charts will feature a color-coded scheme, making it easier for people to read. Each color represents a certain action, making it easier to know what to do at a glance.
  • Use of Letters – While there are colors used, letters can also be found. These will usually be the initial of the action that should be taken. For instance, H to Hit, S to Stand, and D to Double.

What do you need to consider about a basic blackjack strategy chart?

While a basic blackjack strategy chart can help an individual make an informed decision, it is always best to exercise a degree of caution whenever they are used.

It isn’t a sure-fire way of winning nor guarantee success. It should only be considered as a guide that can provide an educated guess about what likely scenarios would occur depending on the type of betting action that is made. It can help to reduce the house edge as it allows you to make the best decision.

Unfortunately, several mistakes can be made when it isn’t fully understood. Of course, its features and reading style can create confusion.

An example of a mistake that can be made is in regard to the letter ‘S’ when it is used. It would be reasonable to think that it stands for ‘Split’, but when you remember that it stands for ‘Stand’, then confusion can set in. This is why the use of the letter ‘Y’ has been included. Nonetheless, in the heat of gameplay, people can forget this and then make a potentially costly mistake.

However, with plenty of practice, users can master the chart and start learning the optimum moves to make regarding the provided information.

Can basic Blackjack Strategy be useful?

Obviously, there is a purpose for basic blackjack strategy charts, with veterans swearing by them. They should always be used with care since they are not able to cover everything 100% of the time. These decisions are not based on the latter concept, but on the probability that the event will take place, hence, enabling an educated decision to be made.

Considering that they are not illegal to use, the best thing would perhaps be to use this resource as much as possible to minimize the house edge as much as possible.
