Ashanti and Nelly, the power couple that had us all swooning back in the early 2000s, are not only back together, but they’re also expecting a baby and engaged to be married!
The lovebirds spilled the beans to Essence magazine, and let me tell you, the internet is going wild. Ashanti, who’s 43 and looking absolutely stunning, shared a heartfelt statement with the publication, saying,
“This new year of my life is such a blessing full of love, hope, and anticipation. Motherhood is something that I have looked forward to, and sharing this with my family, fiancé, and loyal fans, who have been so supportive of my career, is an amazing experience.”

But that’s not all – Ashanti also had a little fun with the announcement on her Instagram. She posted a video of herself getting ready for a performance, and when her mom (who’s also her manager) asks how much time she needs, Ashanti drops the bomb: “I’m going to need about nine months.” Cue the gasps and the Proov logo (that’s an at-home fertility and hormone marker test, in case you were wondering).
Ashanti also shared a sweet statement , saying, “As you know, I am so close with my mom and dad, so I am looking forward to being an amazing parent to our child, like they were to me and my sister. Nelly and I are so excited to welcome and love on Baby Haynes.” (Fun fact: Nelly’s real name is Cornell Iral Haynes Jr.)
Now, let’s rewind a bit. Ashanti and Nelly, who’s 49, first got together way back in the day, but they called it quits after a decade. Fast forward to September 2022, and they confirmed that they were giving love another shot, 20 years after they first started dating.
Ashanti even showed up to the MTV VMA Awards with a clutch that had a throwback photo of her and Nelly from when they attended the show together in 2003. Talk about a statement piece! When E! News asked if they were back together, Ashanti played it cool at first, but eventually admitted, “I mean…yeah.”
Nelly also opened up about their rekindled romance during an appearance on “Boss Moves with Rasheeda,” saying, “We cool again. I think it surprised both of us. It wasn’t anything that was planned.”
