Apple Inc. CEO Tim Cook dropped a hint that the tech giant is preparing to make waves in the red-hot generative AI space, with joint initiatives related to the advanced technology likely to be announced later this year.
In a recent interview at a privacy conference, Cook said the rise of AI systems that are capable of producing synthetic media such as images, video, and text presents a “huge opportunity” that Apple aims to grasp. While the company has been binge-watching from the sidelines as competitors iterate on artificial intelligence, Cook says generative models have sparked fresh optimism and investment in AI across the fruit-themed brand.
“It’s a space that’s incredibly interesting,” Cook remarked. “We sort of see it as a huge opportunity for the company.”
The rare public comments from the typically tight-lipped executive suggest that generative AI has become a strategic priority for Apple. Cook stopped short of detailing any specific plans or products but said he expects Apple to “have some interesting announcements” over the next several months.
The statement follows breakout launches like DALL-E 2, ChatGPT, and Google’s Bard AI assistant—viral sensations that have propelled generative AI into the mainstream. With technology giants and startups racing to stake their claims, Cook seems poised to throw Apple’s hat in the AI hype ring as early as this year.
