Apple may be working on a huge, Apple foldable tablet, albeit we won’t be able to buy it for years.
According to Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) analyst Ross Young, Apple is considering a folding notebook with a size of “20.x” inches, reports 9to5Mac. It would be a “notebook with a full-size keyboard when folded and a monitor when not folded and utilized with an external keyboard,” according to Young. He also stated that Apple is not in a rush to release such a device, and that it may not be available until 2025 or later.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, citing his own sources, has now corroborated the allegation in his Power On newsletter. He claims it will be a MacBook/iPad hybrid, albeit instead of a real keyboard, Apple is more likely to release a foldable tablet with a virtual keyboard on one side.
Lenovo’s Yoga Book tablet/laptop hybrid, which has an e-ink display instead of a physical keyboard, and the company’s ThinkPad X1 Fold, which combines a foldable tablet with a detachable physical keyboard, give us an idea of what this could look like. Although neither gadget was a great implementation of the concept, we now know it can be done, and perhaps Apple will be able to improve on it.
Gurman focused the majority of this week’s newsletter on the concept of a $199 iPhone aimed at emerging markets, however there is no evidence that Apple is going to release such a handset. What we do know is that Apple will most likely release a new iPhone SE with 5G capabilities in early March.
