Alan Cumming Returns as Nightcrawler in Avengers

Alan Cumming is stepping back into his iconic role as Nightcrawler for Marvel’s highly-anticipated film Avengers: Doomsday, which is set to release in theaters on May 1, 2026. Cumming originally played the teleporting mutant in 2003’s X2: X-Men United, where his performance left a lasting impression on fans.

The announcement was made during a live stream event, where Marvel revealed several exciting additions to the upcoming movie’s cast. Right after the reveal, Cumming took to social media to share a short and fun video of himself mimicking Nightcrawler’s signature teleportation poses, adding the caption: “Never say never.”

Reuniting with Old Friends

Cumming’s return comes with a wave of nostalgia, as he will reunite with fellow X-Men cast members from the early 2000s. These include:

  • Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier / Professor X
  • Ian McKellen as Magneto
  • Rebecca Romijn as Mystique
  • James Marsden as Cyclops

Romijn even commented on Cumming’s Instagram post, saying: “Can’t wait to see blue!” — a sweet nod to Nightcrawler’s iconic blue appearance.

Reflecting on Nightcrawler and Queer Representation

In a 2024 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Alan Cumming opened up about his connection to the Nightcrawler character and how meaningful the role was to him, especially from a queer perspective.

“I think the X-Men film I’m in is the gayest film that I’ve ever done, and that’s me saying that,” Cumming said. “It’s got a queer director, lots of queer actors in it. I love the fact that something so mainstream and so in the comic book world is so queer.”

He explained how superhero films like X-Men can help people understand the experience of being different.

“It’s an allegory about queerness, about people having these great gifts and really great, powerful things that they have to hide to exist. Queer people understand what that’s all about,” he added.

Why This Matters for the MCU

Bringing Cumming back as Nightcrawler is not only exciting for fans but also a smart move by Marvel. It blends the old X-Men universe with the current Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Since Disney’s merger with Fox, fans have been waiting to see how Marvel would include the X-Men in upcoming projects. Avengers: Doomsday seems to be that big step forward.

Alan Cumming’s return to the MCU is a moment of joy for longtime fans. His role as Nightcrawler was both powerful and meaningful, and seeing him back after more than two decades adds emotional depth to the evolving Marvel storyline. With his witty caption “Never say never,” it’s clear that this return means just as much to him as it does to the fans. As Avengers: Doomsday approaches, excitement is building to see what’s next for Nightcrawler and the ever-expanding Marvel universe.
