Twitter Introduces “Zero-tolerance” Violent Speech Policy

Twitter New Verification Ticks

Listen to the Podcast:

On Wednesday, the microblogging platform Twitter revealed its new policy to curb abusive language on the platform. The business has indicated that it will take a “zero tolerance” stance concerning “serious situations.”

The online service said in a series of tweets that it had updated its standards regarding publishing violent content and language similar to that it prohibits. The social media network controlled by Elon Musk announced that it has officially introduced its Violent Speech Policy.

Although the new policy borrows substantially from the previous one, it outlaws making violent threats, wishing harm upon others, glorifying violence, and inciting others to engage in violent behavior. Threats to harm homes, shelters, or infrastructure that is necessary for civic or commercial activity is prohibited by this regulation as well.

In a tweet, the business reiterated its stance of zero tolerance for violent rhetoric. It said that it will, in the vast majority of instances, suspend any account that is found to violate company policies. Twitter has announced that it will force users to delete content from their accounts before they can regain access for infractions of lesser severity.

Although the contents of the most recent policy are comparable to those of the one now in place, the most recent policy is both somewhat hazy and extremely specific. In most instances, users are not permitted to be banned for threatening or glorifying violence under any policy; nevertheless, the most recent guidelines extend to specific scenarios while minimizing others.

The platform’s policy has undergone numerous iterations of revision and rollout over the past few years. Having said that, this is the most recent revision to the Twitter policy guidelines since Elon Musk took ownership of the company. Twitter’s safety policy was revised in 2018 to prohibit communication that dehumanizes anyone based on their membership in a recognizable group. This was done because such speech can lead to offline damage.

Twitter announced in 2019 that it would be increasing its policy about the harmful activity. According to the policy, “We do not allow language that dehumanizes people based on their religion, caste, age, handicap, sickness, race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, gender identity, or sexual orientation.”
