Treating Constipation The Right Way

Treating Constipation

Constipation can happen to anyone and can arise out of poor eating habits or medical conditions. Knowing the signs of constipation and how to treat it is essential for helping people protect their health.

What Are the Signs of Constipation?

Around four million people deal with regular bouts of constipation in the United States. When someone is experiencing constipation, they can deal with a range of symptoms, including the following.

  • Bloating
  • Stomach pain
  • Lack of frequency in bowel movements
  • Irritability
  • Feeling overly full after eating
  • Hard, dry stools

If someone notices the above signs, they need to seek their doctor. There are many causes of constipation, and treating it the right way is essential. Constipation sometimes occurs as a result of a lack of fluids. When people become chronically dehydrated, their bowels can become impacted. Individuals can also experience constipation as a result of a lack of fiber.

Treatments for Constipation

There are many treatment approaches for constipation. Most of these treatments can be conducted at home, though it is wise to seek a doctor for a diagnosis, especially if constipation becomes chronic in nature. Consider the following treatments.

  • Increasing fiber consumption is a beneficial way to stop constipation, but it does not work right away. Fiber bulks stools and makes them easier to pass through the digestive system. Individuals should gradually increase their fiber intake until they are getting 20 to 35 grams a day.
  • Hydration is one of the easiest ways to help prevent constipation and relieve occasional bouts. Aim for drinking at least eight glasses of water a day.
  • Although caffeinated drinks can make a person constipated, there is growing evidence that drinking coffee can help with constipation. A cup of coffee every morning can help a person stay regular.
  • Limiting meats and cheeses is helpful for eliminating constipation. These foods are high in fat and low in fiber and can become impacted the intestines, leading to constipation.
  • Some people can develop chronic constipation because of the foods they consume. Some carbohydrates impact people more than others. Paying attention to their FODMAPS can help individuals avoid uncomfortable constipation
  • It is also essential individuals get plenty of exercises. Exercise is essential for helping the bowels to move properly. Sometimes, exercise can help a person have a bowel movement shortly after.

Seek a Medical Diagnosis

If constipation becomes a chronic problem, individuals need to get a proper diagnosis. There are different conditions that can cause chronic constipation to develop, including irritable bowel syndrome. Getting to the root cause of their constipation problems is essential for finding the right treatment.

If constipation is severe, laxatives are a short-term solution that can bring immediate relief. It is essential individuals work with their doctor to determine the best form of treatment that will bring about fast relief without unwanted side effects.

Constipation can become a painful condition that impacts a person’s life. When the digestive tract comes to a standstill, eating becomes uncomfortable, and the body cannot process nutrients efficiently.

Those dealing with chronic constipation need to talk to their doctor about solutions. Making lifestyle changes, like those above, can bring about welcome relief from bloating, pressure, and discomfort.

Often, successful constipation treatment means making lifestyle changes and seeking medical treatment. Treatment for long-term problems requires a concerted effort that often does not bring on relief overnight. With diligence, people can overcome their constipation.
