On the morning of June 17, 2025, celebrity chef Anne Burrell was discovered unresponsive in her Brooklyn, New York home. Emergency services were called to the scene around 7:50 a.m., following a 911 report of suspected cardiac arrest. Burrell was pronounced dead by first responders at the location. At this time, the official cause of death remains pending autopsy results from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Authorities have confirmed there were no immediate signs of foul play; an investigation is in progress. In the days leading up to her passing, Burrell was reportedly in high spirits, having performed in an improv comedy show at The Second City in New York the night before, which makes the suddenness of her death even more shocking.

A Storied Culinary Journey

Anne W. Burrell was born September 21, 1969, in Cazenovia, New York, and earned a BA in English and Communications from Canisius College in 1991. She honed her culinary skills at the Culinary Institute of America (graduating in 1996), followed by advanced training at the Italian Culinary Institute for Foreigners.

She launched her culinary career in upscale kitchens, including nine months in Italy working in a Tuscan bistro, then as sous-chef at Felidia under Lidia Bastianich. Anne later became executive chef at Centro Vinoteca in Manhattan and briefly operated Phil & Anne’s Good Time Lounge in Brooklyn.

On television, she debuted as Mario Batali’s sous-chef on Iron Chef America in 2005, went on to helm Secrets of a Restaurant Chef from 2008 for nine seasons, and then led Worst Cooks in America as co-host and mentor across 27 seasons from 2010 through 2024. Throughout her career, she also appeared on shows like Chef Wanted, Chopped, House of Knives, and authored two cookbooks—all while teaching at the Institute of Culinary Education.

Anne married Stuart Claxton in October 2021 and became a stepmother to his son Javier. She maintained close relationships with her mother Marlene, siblings Jane and Ben, and her own children Isabella, Amelia, and Nicolas.
