Carrie Coon Refused Avengers Return Over Marvel Pay Dispute

Actress Carrie Coon, renowned for her versatile performances in film and television, notably lent her voice and facial capture to the character Proxima Midnight in Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War (2018). This role marked her entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), portraying one of Thanos’s formidable adoptive children and a key member of the Black Order. Despite the character’s reappearance in Avengers: Endgame (2019), Coon did not return to voice the role, leading to noticeable differences in the character’s portrayal.

Initial Involvement in the MCU

In Avengers: Infinity War, Proxima Midnight emerges as a relentless antagonist, aiding Thanos in his quest to obtain the Infinity Stones. Coon’s involvement began as a voiceover audition, but it evolved to include motion-capture work, primarily for facial expressions. Due to her pregnancy at the time, the physical performance on set was handled by stuntwoman Monique Ganderton, while Coon provided the character’s voice and facial movements in post-production. Reflecting on this experience, Coon shared, “I used to do motion-capture work for video games… it was very physical work that I enjoyed tremendously.”

Absence in Avengers: Endgame

When Marvel Studios approached Coon to reprise her role in Avengers: Endgame, discussions regarding compensation became a pivotal factor. Her husband, actor and playwright Tracy Letts, recounted the negotiations during an appearance on The Ringer’s The Big Picture podcast. He mentioned that despite the monumental success of Infinity War, which grossed over $2 billion worldwide, Marvel was unwilling to offer an increased salary for her return. Coon declined the offer, with Letts quoting Marvel’s response as, “You should feel yourself fortunate to be part of the Marvel Universe.”

In Avengers: Endgame, Proxima Midnight appears during the climactic battle scene but notably lacks any speaking lines. The character’s physical portrayal was once again undertaken by Monique Ganderton. The absence of Coon’s vocal performance contributed to the character’s diminished presence in the film. This change aligns with Letts’s revelation that both he and Coon have not watched either Infinity War or Endgame, indicating a personal distance from the franchise.

Industry Implications and Discussions

Coon’s decision to decline reprising her role due to compensation disputes highlights ongoing conversations in Hollywood regarding fair remuneration, especially in high-grossing franchises. Her stance underscores the importance of equitable pay and recognition for contributions to major cinematic projects. While Marvel Studios has not publicly commented on this matter, Coon’s experience sheds light on the dynamics between talent and major studios within the industry.

Carrie Coon’s Continued Career

Beyond the MCU, Carrie Coon has continued to build an impressive and diverse body of work. She has starred in HBO’s The Gilded Age and appeared in the third season of The White Lotus, showcasing her range and dedication to complex characters. Her choices reflect a commitment to roles that align with her artistic values and professional standards.

In conclusion, Carrie Coon’s portrayal of Proxima Midnight in Avengers: Infinity War added depth to the MCU’s roster of characters. Her absence in Avengers: Endgame due to compensation disagreements highlights broader industry issues concerning fair pay and recognition. Coon’s career trajectory continues to demonstrate her talent and resolve in navigating the entertainment landscape.
