Black Keys Tour Nightmare: Drummer Reveals What Went Wrong

Black Keys Tour Nightmare

Patrick Carney, the drummer for The Black Keys, recently expressed his frustration over the cancellation of the band’s fall arena tour and their split with management.

In a late-night post on X, Carney hinted at a deeper issue behind the scenes, promising more details soon.

The Controversial Breakup with Management

While mega-mogul Irving Azoff, who managed the band alongside Steve Moir since 2021, claims the parting was amicable, Carney’s outburst suggests otherwise.

On June 10th, at 3:34 am, Carney posted, “We got fed. I’ll let you all know how so it doesn’t happen to you. Stay tuned.” This message indicates a tumultuous end to their professional relationship, contradicting Azoff’s public statements.

The Cancelled Tour and Ticket Pricing Issues

The Black Keys announced the cancellation of their International Players Tour less than two weeks before firing Azoff and Moir.

The cancellation was attributed to poor ticket sales, which many fans blamed on exorbitant ticket prices. In the current era of surge pricing, ticket costs have skyrocketed, making concerts unaffordable for many fans.

One fan told NBC News, “There’s only a SMALL amount of people (10%) that will spend $500+ on VIP/floor/premium. The rest of us have budgets and won’t spend $100 on nosebleeds.”

The band has promised a revised tour with more intimate venues, but no new dates have been announced yet.

Industry Implications and Azoff’s Controversial Role

The cancellation of The Black Keys tour has sparked wider discussions about the state of the touring industry in North America.

Critics argue that a small group of powerful businessmen, including Azoff, dominate the market, driving up ticket prices and reducing competition.

Azoff’s Oak View Group was mentioned in the Department of Justice’s antitrust lawsuit against Live Nation and Ticketmaster, accused of colluding to keep ticket prices high and artist compensation low.

Azoff’s long and influential career includes managing iconic bands like The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, and Journey.

Known for his aggressive negotiating tactics, he has earned a reputation as a formidable figure in the music industry. However, his influence and business practices have also drawn criticism and legal scrutiny.

Fan Reactions and Speculations

Patrick Carney’s post has ignited speculation and debate among fans and industry insiders. The Full Cast and Crew Podcast speculated, “Band was sold a strong bill of goods to leave prior management, including a big tour which was lined up either in ignorance of or avoidance of market headwinds, to fulfill promises made. Tour soft sales on launch is thus an unforced error by new management.”

Many fans criticized the band for agreeing to the high ticket prices and arena bookings, considering they haven’t released a major hit recently. Others expressed support for Carney and blamed Azoff for the failed tour.

Moving Forward

Despite the setbacks, The Black Keys is determined to continue performing. Their announcement indicated plans to tour in smaller, more intimate venues, though details remain sparse.

It is also unclear whether they have selected new management to guide their future endeavors.

The Black Keys’ recent experiences highlight the complexities and challenges of the modern music industry.

From high ticket prices to management disputes, artists and fans alike navigate a landscape shaped by powerful business interests.

Patrick Carney’s promise to reveal more about their ordeal suggests that this story is far from over, and fans are eagerly awaiting further details.
