Pies Step Up for Teammate Facing Personal Struggles: The Brayden Maynard Story

Pies Step Up for Teammate Facing Personal Struggles

Collingwood coach Craig McRae has praised his team’s resilience following their impressive King’s Birthday win over Melbourne.

The Magpies led at every stage in their 38-point victory on Monday afternoon despite facing intense pressure from the Demons early in the game.

This win pushes ‘Fly’s Pies’ into the top eight, marking their sixth victory of the season out of 12 games.

Return to Winning Ways

After suffering their first defeat since Round 2 against the Bulldogs last Friday, Collingwood bounced back with a gritty but convincing performance at the MCG.

The Magpies demonstrated their ability to withstand and respond to early challenges, setting the tone for a strong performance throughout the game.

Brayden Maynard Faces Hostile Crowd

In the first meeting between the Magpies and Demons since the incident involving Brayden Maynard and the now-retired Angus Brayshaw, Maynard was met with hostility from Melbourne supporters.

Despite the negative reception, Maynard remained unfazed, showcasing his characteristic defensive prowess and physicality in a controlled and legal manner.

McRae’s Support for Maynard

After the game, McRae briefly addressed Maynard’s challenging personal circumstances. “He (Maynard) has had a lot going on this week — I won’t share the details of it, but off the field, it’s been really hard for him,” McRae commented. “I’m sure he wanted to put on a good performance for stuff that’s happened outside of here. He’s a proud man and he played exceptionally well. We love him.”

When pressed for more information, McRae chose to respect Maynard’s privacy, stating, “I’ll leave it. It’s unfortunate what’s happened in his private life. I’ll leave it at that.”

Emphasizing Controlled Aggression

McRae highlighted the importance of maintaining controlled aggression, knowing that Melbourne would come out strong. “It is what we wanted the whole group to be, and we knew there’d be a response,” he said. “They’re a proud group, I know, watching them from afar, you just go, ‘I’m worried (about) what’s coming’. You just knew there’d be a response.”

Despite the anticipated challenge, McRae praised his team’s ability to absorb the pressure and still play their game. “I didn’t want to overplay it, but we had to be ready for what was coming on the rebound. I’m proud of us to stay in that moment and absorb it and accept what was coming, and then still play our way — it was a really pleasing start.”

Crowd Reactions

Regarding the hostile reception Maynard received from the Demons’ crowd, McRae humorously downplayed it, saying, “I thought they were cheers, mate. I only heard cheers.”

Looking Ahead

McRae acknowledged the significance of the win, especially given the team’s injuries and inexperience. “Today was a significant outcome,” he said. “We’ve been working towards swimming against the current — I’ve said that before around our injury list.”

With no immediate return of injured players, McRae emphasized the importance of the current group stepping up. “There’s no one coming back next week. This same group’s had opportunities, and we’ve been fighting. We’ve been fighting.”

He expressed pride in the team’s performance, particularly from the younger players, as they prepare for their next match against North Melbourne at Marvel Stadium on Sunday. “It’s been a tough period for us, and we’re getting through it, and it’s nice to get some nourishment today, which we didn’t get last week.”

This article highlights the key aspects of Collingwood’s victory, the support for Brayden Maynard amid his personal challenges, and the importance of maintaining focus and resilience as the team moves forward.
