The new “The Hunger Games” film, “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping,” is set to hit theaters in 2026, continuing the beloved dystopian adventure series.

Fans are eagerly anticipating this latest installment, which promises to delve into the backstory of one of the franchise’s most intriguing characters, Haymitch Abernathy.

Release Date and Announcement

“The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping” is slated for release on November 20, 2026. The announcement was made on June 6, 2024, via the official Instagram page for “The Hunger Games” with the caption, “Welcome to the Second Quarter Quell.” The film will focus on Haymitch Abernathy, the second-ever “Hunger Games” winner from District 12, played by Woody Harrelson in the original series.

Storyline and Setting

The film takes us back 24 years before the first Hunger Games movie to the morning of the reaping for the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell.

This special edition of the Hunger Games featured twice the usual number of tributes, with two boys and two girls from each district, making a total of 48 contestants.

Haymitch Abernathy emerges as the victor of this grueling event. The storyline will explore his journey and the strategies he employed to survive, including his clever use of the arena’s forcefield as a weapon.

The film will also highlight his bond with fellow District 12 tribute Maysilee Donner, whose death profoundly affected him.

Production Team and Direction

Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson will return as producers for this prequel. Francis Lawrence, who directed every Hunger Games movie since “Catching Fire,” is in talks to direct “Sunrise on the Reaping.” With this experienced team, fans can expect a film that stays true to the spirit of the original series while offering fresh insights into Haymitch’s character.

Suzanne Collins’ New Novel

The film is based on the fifth novel in Suzanne Collins’ acclaimed series, also titled “Sunrise on the Reaping,” set to be published by Scholastic on March 18, 2025.

Collins, known for her deep and thought-provoking storytelling, revealed that she drew inspiration from the writings of 18th-century Scottish philosopher David Hume, particularly his ideas on implicit submission and governance.

“With ‘Sunrise on the Reaping,’ I was inspired by David Hume’s idea of implicit submission and, in his words, ‘the easiness with which the many are governed by the few,’” Collins stated. The novel will explore themes of propaganda and the power dynamics within Panem.

What to Expect from the Plot

The 50th Hunger Games, or the Second Quarter Quell, is a significant event in Panem’s history. Known for its brutal twist of doubling the tributes, it presents a challenging and deadly environment.

Haymitch’s cunning and survival instincts will be central to the narrative, showcasing how he navigates the treacherous arena.

Fans will get to see the making of the mentor who later guides Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark.

Anticipation and Fan Reactions

Fans have long been clamoring for more content focusing on Haymitch Abernathy. Actress Rachel Zegler, who starred in “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” a previous prequel, expressed her excitement for a Haymitch-centric story, tweeting, “girls don’t want boys.

girls want Suzanne Collins to release a Haymitch Abernathy origin trilogy.” The announcement has generated significant buzz and anticipation among the franchise’s dedicated fan base.

Casting and Production Details

As of now, there are no confirmed details regarding the cast for “Sunrise on the Reaping.” The casting of a younger Haymitch Abernathy will be crucial to capturing the essence of the character.

With Francis Lawrence likely to return as director, the film is expected to maintain the high production values and engaging storytelling that have characterized the previous installments.

“The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping” promises to be a thrilling addition to the beloved series, offering fans a deeper look into the backstory of Haymitch Abernathy.

With Suzanne Collins penning the novel and a talented production team at the helm, this prequel is set to captivate audiences when it hits theaters in 2026.

As fans eagerly await the release, the world of Panem continues to expand, keeping the spirit of “The Hunger Games” alive and well.
