Unraveling the Mystery: Why Is the Number 13 Feared [Explained]

Why Is the Number 13 Feared

Throughout history, the number 13 has been shrouded in superstition and fear, weaving its way into the fabric of various cultures and traditions. But why is this seemingly innocuous number treated with such apprehension and unease?

This question has puzzled historians, cultural researchers, and the superstitious alike. From the skipped 13th floors in skyscrapers to the avoidance of 13 guests at a table, the fear of the number 13, known as triskaidekaphobia, has manifested in countless ways across the globe. This intrigue goes beyond mere coincidence or folklore; it is rooted in historical events, religious beliefs, and even psychological factors. In this exploration, we delve into the origins of the number 13’s notorious reputation, uncovering the blend of myth and reality that has contributed to its status as an unlucky number. Join us as we unravel the mystery of why the number 13 is feared and how this phobia reflects broader human tendencies toward superstition and the unknown.

People Fear 13 for Many Reasons

Have you ever stepped out of an elevator on the thirteenth floor? If not, it likely has a lot to do with the superstition some cultures hold about the number thirteen. Why do certain individuals believe that the number brings them misfortune?

Superstitions can be Really Weird

Superstitions can be quite strange in different cultures, but one of the most peculiar ones is the fear of the number thirteen. Explaining the global impact of the number thirteen on people’s daily lives is quite challenging.

Americans Hate the 13th Floor

For instance, consider the results of a 2007 Gallup poll, which revealed that a significant majority of the American population would feel uncomfortable sleeping on the thirteenth floor of a hotel. 87% of people mentioned they wouldn’t prefer it.

A Strange Coincidence

It’s quite fascinating that 13% of individuals mentioned they wouldn’t mind being assigned to the thirteenth floor of a hotel. Out of those who mentioned being bothered, the majority indicated they would ask to be relocated to another floor.

The Power of the Number Thirteen

The significance of the number thirteen in culture is so strong that Otis Elevator Co. skips it in their elevators and goes straight to fourteen, as if the floor doesn’t exist, as mentioned by Barry Markovsky.

An Expert in the Fear of Thirteen

Markovsky is a retired Sociology professor from the University of South Carolina who specializes in the number thirteen and the superstitions associated with it, believing they hold significant influence.

Triskaidekaphobia is Nothing to Worry About

Did you know that the fear of the number thirteen has a scientific name? It’s called triskaidekaphobia. According to Markovsky, the origin of this fear is not widely known. “The reason behind 13’s negative reputation… is unclear and based on speculation,” he stated.

Does the Fear of 13 have Norse Origins?

One possible reason is that the superstition surrounding the number thirteen originated from the belief that having thirteen dinner guests was unlucky, stemming from ancient Norse mythology.

Loki and the Feast at Valhalla

According to Norse mythology, Loki was the 13th guest to show up at a feast in Valhalla. He managed to deceive another guest into murdering the god Baldur,” Markovsky explained. Concerns about the number thirteen may have also originated from Christian beliefs.

Or Maybe Christianity is to Blame?

“In Christianity, Judas, the apostle who betrayed Jesus, was the 13th guest at the Last Supper,” Markovsky added. He mentioned that negative connotations related to a specific number can be found in various cultures.

Any Culture can Develop a Fear of a Number

“Under certain circumstances, a rumor or superstition can create its own social reality, growing like an urban legend as it travels through time,” Markovsky noted, mentioning that nine was considered an unlucky number in Japan.

An Imperfect Number in a Near-perfect World

More intriguing than Markovsky’s sociocultural explanation is the theory that thirteen may have evolved into an unlucky number due to being an imperfect number that doesn’t align with a world structured around the number twelve.

The Sumerians and the Number 12

Barbara Maranzani from History mentioned that the ancient Sumerians created a numeral system centered on the number twelve, which is still utilized for measuring time in our current world.

Today’s Twelve-centric Society

Calendars typically consist of 12 months, and a day is divided into two 12-hour segments. Coming right after a “perfect” number, some believe that 13 was bound to be considered deficient and peculiar,” Maranzani added.

Thirteen is Just an Oddity

Markovsky also noticed this theory and elaborated on how thirteen stands out in a world that typically revolves around the number twelve, pointing out the absence of a thirteenth month, a thirteen-inch ruler, and a thirteenth hour. Why does superstition continue to persist?

The Number Resonates with People

“It resonates with individuals,” Markovsky stated, “and then spreads throughout the culture.” Once obtained, this piece of questionable information provides believers with a feeling of power over the negative aspects linked to it.
