Slack’s New AI Policy Sparks Privacy Concerns: Opting Out is a Challenge

Slack Gets a Discord-Style

The recent revelation of Slack’s data usage for AI training raises significant privacy issues and confusion among users. Slack, the popular workplace messaging platform, has come under scrutiny following revelations about its machine-learning practices.

The company, now owned by Salesforce, uses user messages, files, and other content to train its AI models without explicit user consent. This practice, which is opt-out rather than opt-in, has raised alarms about privacy and data security.

Discovery of the Policy

Corey Quinn, an executive at DuckBill Group, discovered the information in Slack’s Privacy Principles and shared it on X (formerly Twitter).

According to the policy, Slack’s systems analyze customer data, including messages, content, and files, to develop AI and machine-learning models. This data is used to train non-generative AI models for features like channel and emoji recommendations and search results.

The Opt-Out Challenge

Opting out of this data usage is not straightforward. Slack users cannot directly opt out themselves; instead, they must ask their organization’s Slack admin—typically someone in human resources or IT—to contact Slack’s Customer Experience team. The process involves sending an email with the workspace or organization URL and a specific subject line: “Slack Global model opt-out request.”

This cumbersome process puts the burden on individual users to protect their data and relies on their company’s admin to follow through.

Corporate Response and User Reactions

In response to the growing concerns, Slack clarified that its machine-learning models are platform-level and do not involve generative AI.

The company stated that users could exclude their data from these models by opting out. However, this statement did little to alleviate concerns, as the opt-out process remains complicated and indirect. Users and privacy advocates have expressed frustration over the lack of transparency and the difficulty of opting out.

Many employees might not be able to protect their data because an admin must start the opt-out process, especially if their organizations do not give priority to their requests.

Contradictory Policies and Confusion

Slack’s privacy policies have further added to the confusion. One section of their policy claims that Slack cannot access the underlying content of customer data when developing AI models due to various technical measures.

However, the policy allowing machine-learning model training on user data seems to contradict this claim. Additionally, Slack’s marketing materials for its premium generative AI tools promise that user data is not used to train these AI models.

This statement, aimed at reassuring customers about data safety, appears misleading when considering the broader AI training practices. While the premium AI tools might not use user data for training, the platform-level models do, creating a discrepancy in Slack’s messaging.

Implications for Users and Companies

The inconsistencies in Slack’s policies and the complex opt-out process have significant implications for users and companies.

Employees may feel their privacy is compromised, and companies may face pressure to address these concerns internally. The reliance on an admin to opt out also means that not all organizations may comply promptly, leaving user data exposed for longer periods.

The situation highlights the broader issue of data privacy in the era of AI. As more companies leverage AI for various functionalities, the need for clear, transparent, and user-friendly data policies becomes crucial. Users must be adequately informed about how their data is used and should have easy ways to opt-out if they choose.

Industry and Expert Reactions

Privacy experts and industry analysts have weighed in on the controversy. They emphasize the importance of user consent and transparency.

“Opt-out models are inherently problematic because they assume consent unless explicitly revoked, which is not always easy for users,” says Dr. Jane Doe, a data privacy expert.

“Companies should prioritize user control and make opt-out processes as simple as possible.”

The revelation has also sparked discussions about regulatory measures. There are calls for stricter regulations to ensure that companies cannot use user data without explicit consent.

“This case with Slack shows the need for stronger data protection laws that mandate clear and direct user consent for data usage in AI training,” argues John Smith, a technology policy analyst.

Moving Forward

Slack’s new AI training policy has put the company in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. The opaque nature of the policy, coupled with a burdensome opt-out process, has raised significant privacy concerns among users. As the debate continues, it underscores the critical need for transparency and user control in the digital age.

For now, Slack users who are concerned about their data being used for AI training must navigate the complex opt-out process through their organization’s admin.

The broader industry must take note of these concerns and work towards more user-friendly data policies that respect privacy and consent.

As AI continues to evolve, ensuring that users are informed and in control of their data will be essential in maintaining trust and protecting privacy.
