The term “full moon” refers to a lunar phase that happens once a month when the sun, Earth, and moon all coincide in an imaginary 180-degree line.
According to Andrea Jones, a NASA science communicator, the moon’s orbit is roughly 5 degrees different from Earth’s, so it is usually a little higher or lower than Earth’s shadow, allowing the sun’s rays to shine its near side, or the side facing Earth.
When will the Pink Full Moon be visible?
According to NASA, the moon is only full for a brief moment at 2:55 p. m. EDT (18:55 GMT) on Saturday, April 16, but it will appear full in complete from the morning of Friday, April 15 through the early morning hours of Monday, April 18.

However, the moon will not be visible above the horizon in North America until after sunset on April 16.
Why is it known as Pink Full Moon?
Although it is commonly assumed to be named after the hue of the earth’s natural satellite, it is actually called for the vivid pink blooms of creeping phlox or moss phlox (scientific name Phlox subulata), a plant endemic to eastern North America, which bloom in early spring.
