Meta sent an email to users informing them that all Oculus accounts and the associated data will be deleted by the end of the month.
Users need to transfer their Oculus account to a Meta account before March 29 to avoid losing access to apps, in-app purchases, store credits, and other content. According to Report, achievements, friends lists, and any created content associated with the Oculus account will also be lost, as stated in the email.
Meta, previously known as Facebook, now mandates that new users create accounts for the virtual reality (VR) device using Facebook. In 2022, a new feature was introduced allowing users to create a Meta account, part of the ongoing transition away from Oculus accounts.
In January 2023, the company no longer permitted users to access their Oculus accounts, according to the report.
“If your Oculus account is deleted, you will no longer be able to use Meta Quest with your Oculus account and you won’t be able to reactivate or retrieve anything from the account,” Meta’s email stated.
To migrate account information, users should follow the instructions on Meta’s website. It is important to use the same email address for both Meta and Oculus accounts during the data transfer.
Oculus, a virtual reality company, was established in 2012 and was later purchased by Facebook, now known as Meta, in 2014. The Oculus VR device was later rebranded as Meta Quest and now features newer generation devices.
The email to users highlights Meta’s dedication to adopting new technology. Recently, CEO Mark Zuckerberg collaborated with LG Electronics to enhance the company’s extended reality and artificial intelligence goals for new consumer devices.
